Jase froze.

Hannah froze too.

It only took him a second to realize.

The two portions of food were supposed to be for him and me.

But he had just handed my share to Hannah.

Hannah immediately panicked.

She looked completely flustered.

“Mrs. Holloway, I’m sorry. I really didn’t know!”

“I can go buy you another one.”

“What do you want?”

I lowered my head and started cleaning up the leftovers on the table.

My voice stayed calm.

“No need.”

Hannah’s eyes instantly turned red.

“Mrs. Holloway, I swear I didn’t do it on purpose.”

“Mr. Holloway told me to eat, so I did.”

“I…”

Jase looked at me picking up the containers.

Then he looked at Hannah’s innocent expression.

Finally, he spoke.

“Okay. This isn’t your fault.”

“I forgot.”

“Emma, but this is also partly on you.”

“You should’ve told me you hadn’t eaten yet.”

“If you had, I wouldn’t have let Hannah eat it.”

He paused, pulled out his checkbook, and wrote me a check for seven grand.

“Here.”

“Just go downstairs and grab something to eat later.”

I didn’t say anything.

I simply put the insulated lunch container back together.

Closed the lid.

Then stood up.

“Okay.”

I turned to leave.

But Jase grabbed my wrist.

His voice dropped.

“I’m really sorry.”

“I didn’t mean to do that.”

I looked at him.

“I know.”

His fingers slowly loosened.

I walked out of the office.

The moment I got downstairs, I threw the lunch container into the trash.

Then I drove to the mall.

I didn’t know if I was trying to get back at Jase.

Or if I was just trying to let out everything I was feeling.

I ordered an entire table full of food.

Then I ate until I was satisfied.

After that, I went shopping for a while before picking Riley up from preschool.

Then I brought her back to the mall.

And had another huge meal.

When Jase called and asked why we weren’t home, I told him we were eating out.

His voice sounded disappointed.

“Then why didn’t you wait for me?”

I gave a cold laugh.

“When you ate lunch today, did you wait for me?”

He was instantly speechless.

After that, he didn’t say anything else.

But because I had eaten so much seafood at lunch and dinner, my stomach couldn’t handle it.

That night, I got sick.

I ran to the bathroom more than ten times.

By the end, I didn’t even have the strength to get out of bed.

Jase stayed by my side.

He filled a heating pad with warm water.

Helped me sit up.

Then fed me medicine.

“You know your stomach can’t handle this.”

“Why did you eat so much seafood?”

I wanted to argue.

But I didn’t even have the energy.

The moment I swallowed the medicine, my stomach twisted again.

I threw everything up.

Jase patted my back gently.

He looked so worried.

“No, this isn’t normal.”

“You must’ve caught a stomach bug.”

“We need to go to urgent care.”

Jase called his mom, Dorothy, and asked her to come over and watch Riley.

Then he carried me into the car and drove me to the medical center.

After a series of tests, the doctor confirmed it.

I had a stomach bug.

I received IV fluids.

I also took medicine to stop the diarrhea.

Exhaustion quickly pulled me into sleep.

When I woke up, it was already 2:30 a.m.

The IV had already been removed.

But Jase wasn’t beside me.

I opened our chat.

I sent him a message.

[Where are you?]

No reply.

I called him.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Only then did he answer.

His voice was low.

“Emma, what’s wrong?”

I frowned.

“Where are you?”

“Did you come home?”

There was a brief silence.

Then he answered.

“Hannah called me.”

“She said someone was outside her apartment.”

“I didn’t feel right leaving her alone, so I came over to check.”

“The poor girl was too scared to sleep.”

“I stayed with her until she finally fell asleep.”

“Do you need something?”

The moment I heard those words…

“Do you need something?”

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was ridiculous.

“Jase.”

“You’re my husband.”

“You’re at another woman’s place right now, helping her fall asleep.”

“And you’re asking me if I need something?”

His voice was full of helplessness.

“Emma.”

“She’s my employee.”

“Isn’t it my responsibility to help her?”

“Besides, I only came here after you finished your IV.”

I clenched my phone.

“Jase.”

“I’m still at the medical center.”

“You’re not here taking care of me.”

“You’re taking care of your female employee instead?”

“Doesn’t she have anyone else?”

“Why does she need a married man to come over and look after her?”

Jase’s patience finally started running out.

“Emma.”

“Since when did you become so petty?”

“Hannah just graduated from college.”

“She’s new here.”

“She doesn’t know anyone.”

“If something happened to her, who else was she supposed to call?”

He sighed.

“Fine.”

“I’ll call you a ride home.”

“I’ll come back after she’s asleep.”

Then he hung up.

I stared at my phone.

My heart went cold.

By the time I got home, it was already 3:30 a.m.

The moment the door opened, Dorothy quietly walked out of the guest room.

When she saw me alone, confusion flashed across her face.

“Where’s Jase?”

I paused.

Then answered casually.

“Oh.”

“He went to take care of his female coworker.”

Dorothy’s eyes widened.

“What?!”
