Her Familial Usurper System Failed On Me Chapter 08

By the time Nora gor

out on bail, she’d lost a lot of weight.

She went back to her rental apartment. The eviction notice was on the door. Her bank accounts

were frozen. The school had sent a disciplinary notice.

She’d once believed she’d become the only Langley daughter. Now she didn’t even know where

she’d sleep next month.

Finally, the system spoke. Not a reward this time. A liquidation.

[Host has failed consecutive tasks. Familial Usurper System entering ultimate mode.]

[Objective: Destroy Anna Langley.]

[Upon failure: host will be erased.]

A transparent vial appeared on the table.

Nora stared at it for a long time. Her eyes shifted from terror to something wild.

The day of my eighteenth birthday, the Langley house was full of guests.

Mom didn’t host anything too extravagant, but everyone who mattered came.

She’d prepared a cake and a new dress. The dress wasn’t too tight. I liked that.

I asked Mom, “When you’re an adult, do you still have to drink that bitter stuff?”

She said, “Yes.”

Adulthood was useless.

In the middle of the party, I wanted apple juice.

A catering staff brought a tray. I took one glass.

Behind the curtain, Nora stood in a server’s uniform her cap pulled low, hands shaking. She’d

dumped the vial from her system straight into my drink.

I slowly lifted the glass to my lips.

Her gaze blazed with triumphant glee. She was already picturing me having a breakdown in public,

Mom horrified and disgusted.

I took a tiny sip and frowned. Then I spat the liquid into an empty wine glass beside me.

Nora’s smile shattered.

I looked at the glass in my hand and said seriously, This strawberry flavor isn’t sweet.”

A guest beside me blinked. “Young lady, that’s apple juice.”

I sniffed it again. “It’s strawberry. Rotten strawberry

Behind the curtain, a very faint intake of breath.

Mom watched the entire scene unfold from the second–floor balcony, not a flicker of shock

crossing her features.

She raised one finger. Two security guards immediately moved toward the curtain.

Nora tried to run. She got one step before they yanked her out.

Her cap fell off. The room erupted.

Mom came down the stairs, picked up the glass with my leftover juice, and smelled it. “You gave my daughter this?”

Nora tried to lie. “I didn’t know–I was set up!”

Mom nodded. “Then you drink it.”

Nora’s face went white. “No!”

The guards held her chin. Mom brought the glass to her lips. Her voice was calm. “If there’s

nothing wrong, why are you afraid?”

Nora was sobbing. “Mom, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

Mom looked at her. “You’re not wrong. You’ve just lost.”

The juice went down Nora’s throat.

She coughed. She started cursing. Then her eyes went distant.

She stood in the middle of the ballroom, laughing one second and crying the next. She started kowtowing to the empty air, mumbling, “System, spare me. I’ll do the task. I’ll steal Mom back.”

The guests backed away. No one came close.

I looked at the cake. The frosting was starting to melt. I asked Mom, “Can we still eat it?”

Mom pulled me behind her. “Just get a new one.”
