He Wrapped Me Up for His Crush. Now I Live in His Head. Chapter 09

In the days that followed, Logan became a different person.

He used to laugh and joke all the time. Now he was so quiet it scared people.

He zoned out in class. Sat alone during breaks. Barely responded when people talked to him.

His friends said he wasn’t himself.

“It’s just Avery transferring. Why are you like this? Weren’t you always complaining she was annoying? Now that she’s gone you should be happy.”

Happy?

He couldn’t be happy.

Every day after school, he’d wait downstairs at Avery’s building, hoping she was just staying at Aunt Claire’s for a few days.

She’d be back soon.

But one day passed. Two. A week. She still hadn’t returned.

Her mom said she was going to school in Briarwood and everything was fine.

“Logan, what happened between you two?”

“Avery left so suddenly she didn’t even tell you?”

He couldn’t answer.

What could he say?

That to impress another girl, he’d treated her like a toy? That he’d crushed her dignity and broken her heart?

Finally, he got Aunt Claire’s address from a friend.

That weekend, he took the three-hour ride to Briarwood. He needed to see her. Needed to ask. Needed to bring her back.

At the Briarwood Prep gate.

He waited all afternoon. Finally he saw Avery.

She was wearing the new uniform, laughing and talking with a few girls. The smile on her face was one he hadn’t seen in a long time. Relaxed. Natural. Real joy.

Nothing like the careful, cautious way she used to look around him.

Turns out she could smile like that when she left him.

Logan wanted to step forward.

But his feet felt nailed to the ground. Suddenly he wasn’t sure. She looked like she was doing great. Better than when she was with him.

Would his appearance ruin that?

While he hesitated, Avery turned her head.

She saw him. Her smile vanished instantly. Then she looked away like she hadn’t seen him and quickly walked off with her friends.

Being ignored on purpose hurt worse than any words. Logan stood there frozen.

His heart felt like it was being cut open piece by piece. He really had lost her. Completely.
