He Wrapped Me Up for His Crush. Now I Live in His Head. Chapter 06

Monday morning, I left for school as usual.

Mom reminded me, “Be safe. Come home early after school.”

“Logan’s mom said we’re having dinner together tonight.”

“Okay.”

I lied. I didn’t tell Mom and Dad about the transfer.

I didn’t want them to worry or try to stop me.

I’d tell them once everything was settled.

At Lakeview High, everything looked normal.

Except the way classmates looked at me now held a new layer of mockery.

The whispers never stopped.

“Hey, look, our school mummy is here.”

“No bandage cosplay today?”

“Hahaha…”

“I heard Logan went to find her yesterday and she slammed the door on him.”

“So ungrateful.”

I kept my face blank and walked to my seat.

Let them say whatever. This was my last day anyway.

Logan was already in the classroom.

He turned around.

“Still mad?”

His expression was a little pleading, but his eyes still held that same entitlement.

As if my anger was just a kid throwing a tantrum.

“I bought amusement park tickets yesterday. Want to go after school?”

“And I got your favorite mango cheesecake. It’ll cheer you up.”

I ignored him and pulled out my textbooks.

I started packing everything that was mine into my bag. Every pen, every eraser. I left nothing behind.

He frowned.

“Avery, that’s enough.”

Impatience crept into his voice.

“I already apologized. What more do you want? Yesterday was just us messing around.”

“Look, Tyler got one of his eyebrows shaved yesterday and he didn’t get mad.”

I still didn’t speak and kept packing.

Harper walked in.

She paused when she saw us, then smiled and came over.

“Morning, Logan.”

Her voice was sickeningly sweet.

“Avery, are you okay? I’m really sorry.”

She bit her lip, looking innocent.

“About yesterday, I really didn’t expect them to go that far. I was just saying…”

“It’s fine.”

I cut her off.

I didn’t want her fake apology.

I didn’t want to waste my last moments on her.

Logan immediately jumped in protectively.

“Harper already apologized. Let it go. She didn’t mean it. You know how she is, innocent, speaks before she thinks.”

Innocent?

I almost laughed.

Harper was the best actress I’d ever seen. Playing the victim while calculating every move.

But Logan ate it up.

I stood up. “I’m going to the restroom.”

I needed to calm down.

Otherwise I might lose control and rip off Harper’s mask in front of everyone.

In the restroom, I looked at myself in the mirror.

Pale face, dark circles. I hadn’t slept well. Nightmares one after another.

In the dreams, I was still hanging from the flagpole. Everyone laughed. Logan laughed hardest.

I woke up with a wet pillow and splashed cold water on my face.

Avery, just one more day.

Tomorrow you’ll be free.

Back in the classroom, Logan and Harper were chatting happily.

She sat in my seat. They were leaning close.

Logan was teaching her math. Hand over hand.

I stood at the door watching quietly. He used to teach me like that too.

The difference was, he was always impatient with me.

“Avery, how are you so slow? You can’t even do something this simple?”

With Harper, he was endlessly patient.

“It’s okay, take your time. Here’s a little trick.”

So that’s what like and dislike looked like.

The bell rang.

I silently took an empty seat in the back row.

I didn’t want to see them anymore. All morning, I stayed in the back.

The teacher asked why I changed seats. I said my eyes hurt and I couldn’t see the board.

The truth was, I was drained. I didn’t want to be near them anymore.

At lunch, I went to the snack bar and bought a bunch of snacks I usually wouldn’t buy.

The lady at the counter smiled.

“Buying so much today?”

“I’m in a good mood.”

Yeah. A good mood.

Because I was about to be free.

About to leave this place.

In the last class of the afternoon, I packed up everything.

Textbooks, supplies, even the trash in my desk.

Nothing left behind. I wanted to leave clean.

Logan noticed.

“Why are you packing everything?”

“Not coming tomorrow?”

He was joking.

His tone was light, still smiling.

But he was right. I looked at him without speaking.

That look held so many questions.

I wanted to ask what our sixteen years of friendship meant to him.

If he’d ever truly cared about me.

If he could do it over, would he still treat me this way?

But in the end, I asked nothing.

What was the point? I already knew the answer.

The final bell rang.

I slung my bag over my shoulder and took one last look at the classroom.

Three years of memories here. Laughs and tears.

But from today on, none of it had anything to do with me.

I left without looking back.

Logan’s voice came from behind.

“Hey! Wait up! Weren’t we going to the amusement park?”

“Avery! What are you throwing a fit about now?”

I walked faster.

I walked through the school gates and got into Aunt Claire’s car.

She’d taken time off to pick me up.

“Everything ready?” she asked.

Her eyes were gentle and pained.

“Yeah.”

“Then let’s go. Aunt Claire will take good care of you.”

The car slowly pulled away.

In the rearview mirror, I saw Logan run out.

He stood at the Lakeview High entrance, looking lost.

He was still holding two amusement park tickets.

The wind blew his hair, making him look a little lonely.

But so what?

His loneliness was nothing compared to my pain.

See you, Logan.

And never again.
