He Was Ready To Die Until I Told Him I Was Pregnant Chapter 04

When I was six months along, someone showed up at the estate looking for Arthur.

A middle-aged woman. Weathered and hard-faced.

She barged in like she owned the place, and the second she laid eyes on Arthur, she got right in his face.

“So this is how it is, Arthur? I took you in when you had nothing, and now that you’ve got money, you think

you’re too good for your own family?!”

“You ungrateful piece of shit! After everything I did for you!”

“I never should’ve taken you in! Should’ve left you to rot with your dead parents!”

The color drained out of Arthur’s face. Every word landed like a fist.

The comments flickered in.

[Oh God, it’s his aunt, Martha Higgins. The one who took him in as a kid.]

[She literally abused him his entire childhood and she has the NERVE to show up and yell at him?? I’m going

to be sick.]

[Actually… the first two years after his parents died, she was really good to him. Treated him like her own

kid.]

According to the comments, Martha’s pregnancy happened around the same time her husband lost his job. They burned through the inheritance Arthur’s parents had left him to pay for their own child.

Arthur became an afterthought. Then he became invisible.

Once their son was born, Arthur became the scapegoat. The kid threw a tantrum? Arthur’s fault. Every time.

First it was going without meals and being locked in the basement for hours. Then it got worse.

Eventually, they didn’t even need a reason.

His childhood was a blur of fear and pain.

The comments were gutted.

[If she’d been cruel from the start, at least he could’ve hated her without all this guilt…]

[But she gave him two good years first. He still remembers what it felt like to be loved by her. That’s what

makes it so much worse.]

[Why does she have to show up NOW? He was already barely hanging on. This could push him right over the

edge…]

Martha saw the color leave his face and practically lit up. She still had him exactly where she wanted him.

She planted herself on the living room sofa like she’d already won, jabbing her finger at Arthur.

“You owe me for every year I spent raising you. That’s at least one million… no, make it five million!”

“Your cousin’s getting married, and you’re buying him a house.”

“And he needs a job. An executive position at your company. If you say no, I’ll go to the press. I’ll tell the

whole world what kind of person you really are, how you turned your back on the woman who raised you.”

Arthur’s jaw locked. His fists were white at the knuckles. There was anger in his eyes, buried under

something heavier-a suffocating kind of helplessness that paralyzed him.

One look at him and I knew. He was spiraling again.

I let out a sigh, stepped forward, and gave the woman my sweetest smile.

“If money’s what you want, I’m sure we can work something out.”
