He Wanted an Heir, So I Gave Him Ashes Chapter 31

He started calling every friend and business partner he could think of who had ever had dealings with Ellie.

One after another.

The answer was always the same.

They didn’t know.

Some of them even laughed, their voices dripping with mockery.

“Mr. Walker, she’s your wife. Why are you asking me?”

Later, Rhett went to Ellie’s office in the main house.

The door was unlocked. He pushed it open.

The space was empty.

Her documents, her computer, the professional books she had brought from New York—all gone.

Even her favorite Italian coffee machine had disappeared, leaving only a clean spot on the counter where it had once sat.

Rhett stood in the doorway, suddenly remembering the last time he had come here.

Ellie had been looking down at a financial report, never once glancing up at him.

She had been furious then.

That’s why she had told him in that icy tone to go handle Daisy’s “trouble.”

But at the time, he had thought she was just sulking. He had turned, driven away, and stayed out all night.

Rhett stood in the doorway for a long time, a heavy weight pressing on his chest, making it hard to breathe.

If it had been Ellie standing there that day, watching him drive off to find Daisy, had her heart ached the way his did now?

He suddenly realized that three years ago, when Ellie first discovered his affair with Daisy, she must have been disappointed then, too.

Perhaps these last three years had been the final chance she was willing to give him.

And he had destroyed it with his own hands.

He remained in the office doorway until night fell, then dragged himself back to his bedroom.

His parents had finished dealing with company matters and left.

The entire mansion was so quiet it was unnerving.
