He Wanted an Heir, So I Gave Him Ashes Chapter 26

For years, Daisy lived in Ellie’s shadow.

After graduation, she moved back home and took a job as a hostess at an upscale bar, thinking she and Rhett Walker would never cross paths again.

But then, he started coming in to drink. Alone.

He was drunk, his handsome face twisted with pain, Ellie’s name a constant refrain on his lips.

“I’m sorry, Ellie.”

“I never thought the accident would…”

“I don’t know how to face you.”

From those drunken ramblings and town gossip, Daisy pieced together the truth. There had been an accident. Ellie had been injured saving Rhett and could no longer have children.

She knew Rhett was avoiding Ellie, that the family’s expectation for an heir was crushing him.

And she saw her chance.

She approached him as an old classmate, sat with him, comforted him, told him the accident wasn’t his fault. She even played the strategist, advising him on how to coax Ellie, how to help her accept the reality of their situation.

At first, Rhett just sent her expensive jewelry and handbags as thanks.

But they grew closer.

She knew they were just one step away.

So she gave him a push.

One night, just the two of them, she looked into his eyes, tortured by guilt and pressure, and said in an almost devout tone, “Rhett, the only way to bring Ellie out of this is to give her a child.”

“If I… if I were willing to have the baby and let Ellie raise it, maybe she wouldn’t be so tormented by the fact that she can’t conceive.”

Daisy didn’t know if it was her words that persuaded him.

But that night, they crossed the line.

After that, they met in more than just hotels. When Ellie was on business trips, they even met in the Walker family’s century-old mansion.

And then, she got pregnant.
