He Wanted an Heir, So I Gave Him Ashes Chapter 25

When the study door opened again, Daisy knew something was wrong.

She had been waiting restlessly in the living room, holding the child. Old Mr. Walker and Rhett both wore expressions as dark as a storm-filled sky.

She looked at Rhett, and her heart went cold.

As she feared, Rhett took her to a corner of the porch, out of his parents’ sight. His expression was a complicated mask.

“Daisy, the family will give you some money.”

His voice was soft, but it landed in her heart like a boulder.

“But you can’t stay here anymore. And you can’t… see Beau again.”

Daisy’s legs gave out. She clutched the porch pillar to keep from collapsing.

“So even after I gave you a son, after all these years… in the eyes of the Walker family, I still can’t compare to that woman from the East Coast, can I?”

She couldn’t understand how it had come to this.

She had loved Rhett for years.

In college, she had been smitten. But Rhett’s eyes had always been on the brilliant Ellie Vance, who looked at everything in Texas with a cool, appraising gaze.

To get Rhett’s attention, Daisy did everything she could. If he joined a club, she ran for secretary. If he attended a lecture, she sat in the front row.

But Rhett would drop everything in an instant if Ellie said, “I have a new idea.”

Once, for a business class, both she and Ellie had to draft a development proposal. Daisy stayed up for nights, combining her local knowledge with market research to create what she believed was a perfect plan for the ranch.

After class, she mustered all her courage and handed the report to Rhett, hoping for a word of advice.

Rhett didn’t even look at it. He tossed it straight into the trash.

“I only care about results, Daisy. Process means nothing to the Walker family.”

Yet when Ellie casually mentioned a vague concept about “organic certification and direct-to-consumer sales,” Rhett acted as if she’d discovered a new continent, pulling her into a corner of the library to discuss it with her all night.
