Before Mattew could say another word, Leo spoke.

His green eyes were full of contempt, and the sheer force of his presence was enough to overpower most of the adult wolves in the room.

“Shut up.”

“You are not worthy to speak in my father’s presence.” Leo tilted his head, his tone both innocent and cruel. “A weakling who relies on a woman to secure his position. A failure who can’t even protect his own mate. A…” He paused, thinking, then smiled brightly. “A loser who sired a defective pup, unrecognized by

the Moon Goddess.”

Someone in the crowd couldn’t help but chuckle. No one had expected Leo to be so vicious with his words.

Mattew’s face turned a shade of sickly green. “You-”

“Was I wrong?” Leo blinked. “Has your son had his first shift? Or does he not have a wolf at all?”

Shaking with shame and fury, Mattew trembled.

“Enough!” Claire suddenly shrieked. Hearing her son insulted like that, especially after Mattew had just tried to replace her with me, made her snap.

“You little bastard!” Claire’s eyes blazed red. Her claws shot out as she lunged at Leo like a madwoman.”

I’ll kill you!”

“Leo!”

My heart stopped.

Without thinking, I threw myself over my son, shielding him with my body.

A sharp, searing pain tore through my back.

“Mommy-” Leo’s terrified, tear-filled scream rang in my ears.

I wanted to tell him I was okay, but my vision went black. The shock and pain were too much, and I lost consciousness.

The last thing I heard was David’s soul-shattering roar of fury.

I don’t know how much time had passed.

When I woke up, I was in a hospital bed. The air smelled of antiseptic.

“Georgia! You’re finally awake!”

My best friend Ava’s face came into view, her eyes red and puffy.

“I…” my voice was hoarse. “Where’s Leo?”

“He’s fine. He’s with David now,” Ava squeezed my hand. “The doctor said you and the baby are both

okay. You were just in shock. You need to rest.”

I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding.

“What… what happened after?”

Ava’s expression grew complicated. “After you passed out…” She took a deep breath, trying to find the

right words. “David snapped.”

“I’ve never seen the Alpha King like that. The pressure from his aura nearly crushed the entire hall. Everyone was forced to their knees, unable to move.”

“He forced a poison down Claire’s throat-Wolfsbane. And then he had his guards slap her a hundred times, saying he wanted her to feel a hundred times the pain you felt. Her face was swollen beyond

recognition.”

Wolfsbane was the cruelest poison in the werewolf world. It didn’t kill you right away. It made you suffer the agony of your organs being torn apart for seven days straight before finally ripping away your wolf and letting you bleed out from every orifice.

“As for the guests, everyone who just stood by and watched was punished,” Ava continued. “Some were stripped of their pack positions, others had their family businesses destroyed, and a few were exiled from the pack alliance entirely.”

“David made an announcement to every pack in North America: Anyone who dares to harm you will pay

the price.”

I was silent. I never imagined my injuries would drive David to such a frenzy.

Finally, I asked, “What about Mattew?”

Ava’s expression turned strange. “David was going to give him the same poison, but Claire used her last

bit of strength to shield him. He got away.”

I could guess what Mattew must have promised her-empty promises about protecting their son, most likely. Claire was a dead woman walking anyway.

“And now,” she looked at me, “David and our little Alpha are using the entire strength of the North

American packs to hunt him down.”

“They’ve sworn,” Ava said softly, “to make him pay.”
