He Waited for Me at the Border, I Already Left the Country Chapter 06

Adrian stood not far away, still holding the ER admission transfer forms.

I said, “It’s fine. She didn’t do it.”

After the officers finished taking notes, they copied the security footage.

Adrian walked up to me. His lips moved. “Elena, I…”

Before he could finish, the ER doors opened.

“The patient is temporarily stable, but she needs to be observed in the ICU for twenty-four hours A family member should come handle the admission transfer.”

My heart had only just begun to settle, and it was thrown back into the air again.

The ICU doors were closed. The red light above them glared so brightly it hurt to look at.

Adrian stood beside me, his voice hushed and low. “I’m sorry, Elena. I didn’t know it would turn

into this.”

I clenched my fist, stood up, and slapped him across the face.

My palm went numb. Half my arm trembled.

“You didn’t know? What do you know?”

“The night my mother was ER last time, you took Sienna out to a late-night grill and bragged about

how you controlled me.”

“Eight years. All you ever knew how to say was wait.”

“Did you not see everything I did for you? Or are you still pretending?”

Two nurses passing through the hallway slowed for a moment, glanced over, then lowered their heads and walked away.

Adrian’s face turned to the side. For several seconds, he did not move.

My hand was shaking. My voice was shaking too.

“She said you two were going to get a marriage license soon. She said she was the only one in your

heart.”

“She said you bought her a condo and put the title in her name.”

“She said I clung to you for eight years, like I was some kind of joke.”

Tears kept falling.

I lifted a hand to wipe them away, but the cut at the corner of my mouth split open again. Blood

mixed with tears and ran down my face.

How ridiculous.

Never try to raise a boy into a man.

Eight years.

My father died without ever seeing me in a wedding dress.

Now my mother was lying behind those doors because of me too.

Adrian slowly turned his head back. A red mark had spread across his face.

The way he looked at me was impossible to describe.

“The condo… Sienna said she didn’t feel secure.”

I hit his shoulder with my fist, again and again.

“When you did all these things, did you ever think about me?”

“I waited eight years. My father closed his eyes for the last time without ever seeing me as a bride.”

“She didn’t feel secure? What about me? What was I to you?”

His eyes reddened, and his lips trembled. “Elena, I…”

I leaned against the wall and took several breaths before I could steady myself.

“Did you watch that video?”

“She said you two had been together for a long time. She told my mom to control me and stop me

from clinging to you.”

“She looked so pretty when she said it, smiling the whole time.”

“My mother’s face turned paler and paler. She stood up and pointed at Sienna, and her hand was

shaking so badly.”

“My mother said, My daughter spent eight years with you. Eight years.”

I could not go on.

Adrian stood there helplessly, like a child being punished.

i knew him too well.

Now he felt guilty.

Now he had started remembering my good side.

And at last, those two words would not come out of his mouth.

Wait.

What was there left to wait for?

“Elena… I didn’t know Sienna could be that cruel.”

I smiled faintly, and blood seeped again from the corner of my mouth.

“If you had told me from the beginning that I wasn’t the one you loved, that I was just a placeholder, I would never have clung to you.”

“But you couldn’t let me go.”

“You couldn’t let go of the woman who did your laundry and cooked your meals. You couldn’t let go of the woman who stayed up with you when you worked late. You couldn’t let go of the woman who poured her entire paycheck into this home.”

“You couldn’t give up how good I was to you, and you couldn’t let go of her either.”

“So you made me wait. Wait. And wait again.”
