He Turned My Love Into a Grave Chapter 16

He flew back immediately. His secretary handed him a file. By the time he finished reading, his face had turned to stone.

He hurled the file onto the desk. “Who did this? A hundred-billion-dollar deal, and someone messed up the decimal point?”

The secretary trembled, her expression pained. “It was Lila Hale. After you left, she came to the company as an assistant. She was only supposed to handle photocopies, but that day things got chaotic. I asked her to double-check a contract before it went for signature.”

“I never imagined it would end up like this.”

Silas’s voice dropped to a deadly pitch. “You handed a contract review to her? Are you out of your mind?”

The secretary flinched. “Sir, she insisted. She said…”

“She said she was your real partner and pushing papers was beneath her. She told us that with how crazy you were about her, we had no right to say no.”

Silas pressed his fingers against his throbbing temple. His head was splitting in two. The mess with Elara was still unresolved, and now the company was spiraling because of Lila’s incompetence.

For three straight days, he scrambled to draft new contracts, apologize to partners, and contain the fallout. And Lila? She had the audacity to complain he’d been neglecting her.

Late at night, he sat in his study with a cup of coffee, agonizing over the details of a new proposal.

Lila walked in, carrying the baby. Instantly, sharp, piercing wails filled the room.

She looked at him with irritation. “Why are you still up? Cole misses his father.”

He set down his pen, keeping his voice measured. “If he’s fussy, give him to the nanny. I have work.”

Lila’s expression soured. She shoved the baby closer. “Silas, what’s going on with you? Ever since you went looking for Elara, you’ve been cold with me. Do you even love me anymore?”

“Yesterday, I found the Prenuptial Agreement. You’re listed as the provider. Elara is the beneficiary. You’re planning to bring her back, aren’t you? You’re going to keep her as Mrs. Voss.”

“Then what am I? Your dirty little secret for the rest of my life?”

Already stretched to his breaking point, Silas felt his temper snap. He stared at her with icy contempt.

“Lila, you know exactly what you are. Who dumped me three years ago? Who came crawling back when things didn’t work out overseas? Who begged me to take her in?”

“And Cole? You drugged me and got yourself pregnant.”

“I brought you back because I didn’t want my son growing up in chaos. But you’ve pushed way past your limits. My wife—my only wife—will always be Elara.”

His knuckles went white. But when Elara’s name crossed his lips, a trace of warmth seeped into his gaze.

Lila stood frozen. “So you love her. Elara. But everyone said the marriage was just business.”

Silas let out a hollow laugh. “At first, that’s exactly what it was. I was dead inside. I wanted to feel nothing. When I heard you’d moved on, I threw myself into something new just to spite you. The Hale family had the strongest foundation. So I picked Elara.”

“I figured she’d be exactly what people said—spoiled, reckless, easy to manage with some money and charm. But after watching her for a while, I realized I had it completely wrong.”

He paused and ran his thumb over the ring on his finger. “Elara, she’s incredible.”
