He Turned My Exam Into a Joke, I Turned the Page Chapter 08

The cab merged onto the freeway toward the airport.

Outside the window, the city rushed backward in a blur.

I sat in the back seat as my phone screen lit up, went dark, then lit up again.

At some point, Luke must have gotten hold of my phone when I wasn’t looking and

unblocked himself.

Luke: [Are you home yet?]

Luke: [The barbecue tonight is pretty spicy. Eat something first so your stomach isn’t empty.]

Luke: [Remember to take your meds on time. Watch the dosage and ease back into them.

Don’t pass out like last time.]

Then came a voice message.

I hesitated for a few seconds, but I still tapped it open.

“Text me when you get home. I’ll worry otherwise.”

It was Luke’s voice, clear and bright in that particular way teenage boys sounded.

Zoey’s laughter was in the background.

I turned off the screen.

Then I placed my phone face down on my lap.

Wind poured in through the window, making my eyes sting.

The driver glanced at me through the rearview mirror. “Young lady, you just finished the SAT

and you’re already catching a flight? Going on vacation?”

“Yeah.”

“Sneaking off without telling your boyfriend?”

“Yeah.”

I answered absentmindedly and turned my face toward the window.

My reflection appeared in the glass.

There was barely any color in my face.

Once I got to Australia, I really needed time to recover.

Luke spent the whole evening shopping with Zoey.

By the time he arrived at the barbecue joint carrying bag after bag, he finally sat down, let out

a long breath, and took out his phone.

“Hm?”

Luke refreshed the chat.

Thinking the signal might be bad, he walked outside and held his phone up higher.

There was still no message from Sienna.

He called her.

“Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently busy…”

The automated voice came through the line.

Zoey walked over to Luke.

“Who are you calling?”

Luke knew Zoey hated seeing him care too much about Sienna, so he hung up and lied

casually.

“Mason.”

“They’re not here yet.”

“They’ll be here soon, probably.” Zoey stood on tiptoe and looked toward the road. “Let’s

order first.”

“It’s been forever since we came here. I’ve been craving this place so bad.”

Luke smiled and pinched her cheek.

“Go order, then.”

He slipped his phone back into his pocket and thought that maybe Sienna had something

going on.

He could check in with her later.
