He Turned My Exam Into a Joke, I Turned the Page Chapter 02

Zoey had terrible cramps, so Luke took the entire afternoon off to go with her to the hospital.

He did not come running back, breathless, until the last class of the day.

“Sorry I’m late!”

The teacher glanced at him. “Come in.”

Luke pulled out his chair and sat down. Hiding behind a tall stack of books, he took a bag out from inside his jacket.

The smell of chili-cheese fries drifted out at once.

“Take it.”

“It’s not every day I get to leave campus.”

He shoved it toward me.

“It’s from that place you love. I ran so far for it. I’m exhausted.”

Luke tugged at his collar and fanned himself.

“I’ll cover for you. Go ahead and eat.”

“If you eat it now, the smell will be gone by the time you get home. Your mom won’t notice.”

I had not eaten anything all day.

But at that moment, even looking at my favorite chili-cheese fries, I had no appetite.

I stayed that way until the dismissal bell rang.

“Hey, hey, a bet is a bet,” Luke said, blocking his buddies. “I won.”

“Pay up.”

They glanced at me.

“Seriously? Nothing?”

“Nope,” Luke said. “And Zoey’s share too. Give it to me. I’ll pass it to her.”

A chorus of teasing groans followed.

“Fine, fine.”

“Don’t get too smug, man. There’s still tonight. Remember to go check.”

After that, the group looked at me again and covered their mouths, snickering.

I lowered my head and said nothing.

Luke sat in his chair, lounging with one ankle propped over his knee as he counted the money. Then he turned, snapped his fingers at me, and grinned.

“I’m pretty good at making money, huh?”

“I’ll take you out for barbecue tonight.”

I picked up my backpack and ignored him, walking straight toward the door.

“Hey!” Luke panicked and hurried to pack his things. “Sienna, wait for me!”

My steps only grew faster.

In all thirteen years we had spent together, this was the first time I had not clung to Luke.

For the first time, I even wanted to stay away from him.

Luke caught up and grabbed my arm. “You…”

Before he could finish, I slapped his hand away.

“Luke, stay away from me.”

“I hate you.”
