I slumped weakly in my seat.

Sweat covered my forehead, and stars swam before my eyes.

The medication I had just swallowed was churning violently in my stomach.

“Help me…”

There was a senior pep rally that afternoon.

After lunch, almost everyone had gone straight to the field.

I bit my lip hard enough to draw blood, forcing myself to stay conscious as I struggled to feel

around in my backpack for my phone.

Then my balance gave out.

I hit the floor with a dull thud and lay there, in too much pain to make a sound for a long

while.

“Luke!” Mason complained. “Why are we walking all the way over here just to bring her a sandwich? Doesn’t she know how to go to the cafeteria herself?”

Luke ignored him and knocked on the window.

“Sienna.”

“Why are you sitting on the floor? Get up and eat.”

Zoey glanced at her watch.

“We’re going to be late. If she wants it, she’ll eat it. Just toss it in.”

Luke hesitated.

He walked to the front door and was about to open it when Zoey stopped him.

“You said you weren’t going to take care of her anymore!”

Her expression hardened.

“Why are you always running after her?”

“Luke! I’m upset! I don’t want to talk to you anymore!”

With that, Zoey shoved Luke away and ran downstairs.

I opened my mouth, but my voice died in my throat.

The sandwich rolled to a stop beside my hand.

Luke’s footsteps grew hurried, then distant, and finally disappeared.

Darkness slowly swallowed my consciousness.

Even in my dream, I was still calling his name.

“Luke, carry my backpack for me.”

“Luke, I want chili-cheese fries.”

“Luke, I’m scared of crowded places. Will you go to the cafeteria with me from now on?”

“Luke, you promised you’d protect me forever. Pinky promise me you won’t break it.”

“Luke, where are you?”
