He Turned My Exam Into a Joke, I Turned the Page Chapter 03

After I got home, I went straight into my room and locked the door.

I stared out the window and watched the sunset slowly fade until the night swallowed it whole.

Knock, knock.

“Sweetheart, come out for dinner.”

I lay on the bed, blank and motionless.

Knock, knock, knock.

“Sweetheart?”

“Why did you lock the door? What are you doing in there?”

Mom’s knocking grew more frantic.

“Sienna, are you having an episode? Open the door!”

I did not move.

Just like they had said, I really did want to crawl under the covers and sob my heart out.

But I did not even have the strength to move.

My ears were filled with a constant buzzing.

Bang.

The door was kicked open.

The next second, I fell into an embrace scented faintly of lemon.

It was unbearably familiar.

When I was five, this was how I had been pulled back into the normal world.

“Mrs. Parker, I’m here,” Luke said, nodding to my tearful mother. “Sienna won’t retreat back into that old autistic silence again.”

“Don’t worry.”

Mom had no choice but to close the door.

Still dazed, I pushed Luke a little farther away before I spoke.

“Get out.”

Luke’s brows drew together.

“What is wrong with you?”

“Are you mad about the Scantron, or are you blaming me because I didn’t go to lunch with you?”

I curled myself into a ball.

My avoidance made Luke both panicked and irritated.

“Sienna, can you stop being like this all the time?”

“I’m a person. I’m not your dog. I can’t circle around you every second of every day, trying to guess what you’re thinking. Can you just act normal?”

“If you have something to say, then say it.”

My eyes filled with tears.

I wanted to speak, but my throat felt like it was blocked by thorns.

I could not swallow past them or force them out. All I could manage was a muffled whimper.

“Tsk.”

Luke turned his head away.

“Thank God I met Zoey. If I had to spend every day around someone as difficult and closed-off as you, I’d lose my mind sooner or later.”

His voice was not loud, but it cracked through my ears like thunder.

Everything inside me went white.

In that blinding whiteness were all the vows a boy had once made and every memory of him.

He had once seemed like a god descending from the sky to save me.

Thirteen years of inseparable memories flashed before my eyes. He had taught me what love was, and because of him, I learned that love could bring happiness, but it could also bring pain.

At that moment, I was in so much pain I almost screamed.

I grabbed Luke by the collar and slapped him across the face.

“Get out!”

Luke’s head snapped to the side from the force of the slap.

He stood up and said coldly, “Sienna, all you ever do is push away the people who care about you.”

“I’m so sick of this!”

Then he slammed the door and left.
