Three years later.

I stood on the balcony of my new home in San Diego, looking out at the Pacific Ocean.

The sunlight here was soft and warm against my skin.

I wore a white dress, and my hair was much longer than it had been three years ago, falling loosely over my shoulders.

A slim bracelet rested on my wrist, a New Year’s gift from my mother.

“Erin, come eat!”

My mother called from inside.

“Coming!”

I smiled and went back inside.

On the table were slow-roasted beef ribs, salad, and a large bowl of creamy mushroom soup.

My father sat at the table, spooning soup into my bowl.

“Eat more. You’re still too thin.”

“Dad, I’ve gained two pounds.”

“Good. You look healthier with a little extra weight.”

I smiled, sat down, and cut into one of the ribs.

My mother looked at me.

“Slow down. Dinner isn’t going anywhere. I made all this for you.”

We sat together and talked while sunlight streamed through the windows into the living room.

My phone chimed with a message from a coworker.

“Erin, are you ready for Monday’s client presentation?”

“I’m ready.”

I replied, put my phone aside, and kept eating.

After dinner, I helped my mother load the dishes into the dishwasher.

She asked, “Do you ever want to go back?”

“Back where?”

“Seattle.”

I shook my head.

“No. I like it here.”

My mother watched me for a moment.

“You really don’t think about that relationship anymore?”

I smiled.

“Mom, it’s been three years. I stopped thinking about it a long time ago.

She didn’t ask anything else.

She only smoothed my hair gently.

“That’s good.”

I dried my hands and went back out to the balcony.

In the distance, the sun was slowly sinking toward the horizon, turning the sky orange and red.

I took out my phone, snapped a photo, and posted it on social media with a simple caption.

“Beautiful sunset tonight.”

The likes came quickly.

Someone commented, “Gorgeous!”

Someone else wrote, “Next time you go to the beach, I’m coming with you!”

I replied to them one by one.

Then another comment appeared.

It was from someone I used to work with in Seattle.

“I heard Ethan is still looking for you. Did you know?”

My thumb stilled over the screen.

Then I deleted the comment.

Not because I still cared about him.

I simply didn’t want anything to do with him anymore.

That relationship had ended a long time ago.

I put my phone in my pocket and looked out at the sunset.
