He Took Her To The Island We Planned To Marry Chapter 05

Evander Hale had been my classmate back in high school.

We’d known each other for years.

If anything, we were the definition of childhood friends.

He had liked me for a very long time.

But because Rowan existed, he buried those feelings quietly and never crossed the line.

Not until the day Rowan handed the island getaway voucher to Brielle Sutton.

That was the day Evander finally told me everything and became my

fiancé.

We met up with Gideon and Odessa on Evershore Island.

The ocean wind was strong enough to ruin Odessa’s carefully curled hair within minutes.

She kept holding onto Evander’s hand while apologizing awkwardly, barely able to look him in the

eye.

“Evander, I seriously owe you an apology.”

“Back in school, I was awful to you. I definitely didn’t make things easy.”

“Good thing we finally came to our senses.” She squeezed his hand dramatically. “Seraphine’s yours now, so you better treat her right.”

Evander wore a simple white shirt with the sleeves rolled to his forearms, exposing tanned skin and

lean muscle.

Listening to Odessa’s dramatic “confession,” he only smiled softly.

“Actually, I should be thanking all of you.”

Then his eyes settled on me with impossible gentleness.

“I’ve been circling in the clouds for years,” he said quietly. “Visibility was bad. Radar was dead.”

“You’re the ones who finally gave me permission to land.”

The mood instantly lightened.

Odessa burst out laughing and punched him in the shoulder.

“Damn, you’re smoother than Rowan ever was.”

The moment that name came up, the air stiffened slightly.

Nearby, Gideon frowned.

A little later, he quietly pulled me aside.

“Seraphine… are you really sure about this?”

He hesitated before continuing.

“Do you maybe want to give Rowan one more chance? I mean… eight years is a long-”

Before he could finish, Odessa stormed over and punched him hard in the arm.

“Shut up!”

Her glare was lethal.

“You are not ruining this for her.”

“Seraphine’s happiness matters more than anything right now.”

Gideon sighed and finally stopped talking.

We stayed on the island all the way up until the wedding.

As an international commercial pilot, Evander had to leave occasionally for flights overseas.

But every time he landed, he rushed straight back to me without even resting.

He helped me scout venues, choose invitations, coordinate details.

He was exhausted constantly. But somehow, he always looked happy.

One night, I looked up at the stars scattered across the island sky and sighed softly.

“The stars are beautiful here.”

“It’s a shame I won’t be able to see them like this after we go home.”

Evander had been peeling a chilled white peach for me.

At my words, he paused briefly.

Then he lifted a slice to my lips with a crooked grin.

“You see that?” He pointed toward the sky. “That’s the stratosphere. Closest place to the stars.”

“I can’t bring them down for you.”

“But every time I fly, I can take pictures and bring them back instead.”

I didn’t answer.

Sweet juice flooded my mouth.

As the days passed, Gideon and Odessa gradually accepted Evander completely.

Eventually, they even started jokingly calling him “the best replacement player in history.”

The night before the wedding, the sea breeze was soft and the sound of waves drifted through the open windows.

Odessa squeezed into bed beside me and wrapped her arms around me tightly, just like she used to

years ago.

“Seraphine.”

“Yeah?”

“At first… I was really worried.”

Her voice was muffled against my shoulder.

“I thought maybe you were only marrying him to keep that stupid promise. Or because you were

angry at Rowan.”

“I was scared you’d end up trapped with someone you didn’t actually love.”

I gently patted her back without speaking.

“But now?” She lifted her head and looked at me, moonlight reflecting brightly in her eyes. “Now I’m not worried anymore.”

“The way Evander looks at you….” She smiled softly. “You can feel it.”

“He really loves you.”

After a pause, she added quietly:

“I just want you to stay happy forever.”

I turned onto my side to face her.

“So do I,” I whispered.

“We’re both going to be happy.”

Tomorrow, I would put on a wedding dress and walk toward the man who had spent years lost above

the clouds-

and finally chose to land for me.
