He Thought I’d Never Leave, Until I Forgot Who He Was Chapter 04

“She’s forgotten everything you two went through when you were struggling. I brought her

the blackberry moonshine she used to love, but she doesn’t like it anymore.”

The moment Miles finished, irritation flashed in Julian’s eyes.

“Hasn’t she kept up this act long enough?”

“I’m not pretending.”

I looked at him in genuine confusion.

“I don’t like blackberry moonshine. I don’t remember struggling beside you. I don’t even

“Enough.”

Julian cut me off, sounding exhausted.

“Everyone likes new things. I do. You can too. Want me to send a few men your way?”

“No.”

I stared at him.

“That’s disgusting.”

Something in his expression relaxed, almost relieved.

“So it still has to be me, huh?”

He smiled faintly.

“That’s right. You can’t fall in love with anyone but me.”

“So be good and go home. When I’ve had enough fun, I’ll shower, change clothes, get rid of every trace of those women’s scent, and come back to you as your Julian.”

For the first time, I felt as if I were looking at a stranger.

“I don’t want to talk about this anymore. Julian, I just want a divorce.”

“Fine.”

He looked straight at me.

“My assistant will bring the papers tomorrow. If you don’t sign them tomorrow, you’ll be the one taking care of Stenna after she gives birth. How does that sound?”

I looked at him and answered firmly.

“Fine. I’ll sign tomorrow.”

Miles looked frantic and tried desperately to reason with him.

Julian only gave him one answer.

“She’s faking it.”

I went home feeling as if every bit of strength had been drained out of me and collapsed onto the bed.

That night, I could feel my memories peeling away.

More and more of my life with Julian became impossible to reach.

With the last of my energy, I wrote myself a note.

I MUST DIVORCE JULIAN MERCER.

Then I fell into a heavy sleep.

When I woke again, my head felt thick and foggy.

A note lay on the table.

I stared at the words on the note, completely confused.

I carried it into the living room.

Julian sat on the couch, an icy tension hanging around him.

He looked up.

“Awake?”

My face lit up the moment I saw him.

I immediately threw myself into his arms.

I missed you so much.”

Julian went rigid in my embrace.

Then he gave a low laugh.

“Finally came to your senses?”

He glanced at Miles.

“What did I tell you? She can’t bear to leave me. She can’t accept any man but me.’

“No.”

Miles frowned deeply.

“I really think something’s wrong.”

Julian pinched my nose and looked at his executive assistant.

“Destroy the agreement.”

Curious, I asked,

“What agreement?”

I reached toward the papers, but Julian stopped me.

“Never mind. I’m not going to make you take care of Sienna while she’s recovering from

childbirth. I know who matters more. I wouldn’t humiliate you like that.”

I stared at him.

“Who’s Sienna?”

Julian looked momentarily stunned.

Then he rubbed my hair.

“Still playing games? Fine. My sweetheart really is a goldfish. Seven-second memory.”

Miles looked deeply worried..

Julian sighed.

“Relax. She hasn’t forgotten.”.

As if to prove it, he looked at me.

“Baby, do you love me?”

I looked at him and gave him a coy smile.

“Jules. You know the answer.”

Both men froze.

Julian stared at me in disbelief.

“What did you call me?”

“Jules.”

I looked at him.

“Isn’t that your nickname?”

His Adam’s apple bobbed.

“You haven’t called me that in ten years. Ever since we got married, you’ve called me honey.”

I laughed.

“Trying to trick me again?”

I nestled in his arms.

“But Jules, I really do want to marry you. When are you going to marry me?”

I had already begun imagining our future together.

But instead of the delighted reaction I’d expected, Julian took my hand, trembling.

“What are you talking about? We’ve been married for ten years.”

I pulled my hand free and pinched his cheek with a smile.

“Stop messing with me. I-”

But when I looked up, I saw the wedding portrait hanging behind him. I froze.

Julian and I were beaming in the photograph.

I had absolutely no memory of the day.

The photo was carefully preserved, but time had left its faint traces.

We really had been married for ten years.

I looked back at Julian.

“You betrayed me, didn’t you?”

Each word came out clear.

“Otherwise I wouldn’t be forgetting you. Those were divorce papers, weren’t they? Give them

to me. I’ll sign.”

The room fell silent.

The next second, Julian grabbed my hand and pulled me into his arms.

“Evie, your memory loss is from a car accident.”

Miles froze for a moment.

Then, catching on, he rushed forward.

“That’s right. You lost your memory in a car accident. The doctors said you had a hematoma in

your brain and would forget some things every day.”

“A car accident?”

“That doesn’t feel right.”

Before I could press them, Julian looked at Mrs. Carter.

“Take her back to her room. She needs rest.”

Then he turned to Miles.

Come with me.”

Miles followed him toward the study, visibly nervous.

I waved Mrs. Carter off and quietly walked to the study door instead.

I could hear Julian smashing things inside.

“You said you knew how to deal with hexes!” Julian roared. “You said if she forgot, you could

make her remember. So make her remember!”

Julian violently overturned a bookshelf beside him.

Miles stammered.

“I-I didn’t know the hex she told us about was real. There are old grimoires that mention the Forgetting Hex, but I thought it was a legend.”

“Then what’s the counterspell?”

Julian grabbed him by the collar.

Miles shook violently.

“There isn’t one. Whatever cure existed was never passed down.”

Julian drew back a fist.

Before he could swing, Miles blurted out, “She fell in love with you once. Then she can certainly fall in love with you again.”

“If she only remembers the years before you married, then marry her again.”

Silence filled the study.

Julian looked at Miles, then let his hand fall helplessly to his side.

Outside the door, I finally understood.

This wasn’t ordinary amnesia.

The Forgetting Hex was erasing my memories.

He had betrayed me.

Strangely, the house was filled with proof that I had once loved him.

Yet learning that he’d betrayed me barely hurt.

No wonder they called it the Forgetting Hex.

When the memories disappeared, the love attached to them disappeared too.
