I didn’t feel even the slightest trace of pity.

Things had already gotten this ugly, and there was no way class could continue now.

I had always known they might find me someday. I just hadn’t expected them to find me this fast.

Outside, a group of elderly locals gathered around, watching the scene unfold and whispering among themselves. They seemed curious how someone as ordinary as me had managed to attract a man as exceptional as Gavin and even have a daughter with him.

The truth was, I didn’t understand it either.

If Gavin had really loved me that deeply, he never would have cheated.

And if he had already chosen to cheat, why cling to me so desperately now?

Why put on a performance like this?

I didn’t understand it, but I had already made my decision long ago.

I would never appear in front of them again.

Whatever tie had once existed between us ended here.

Gavin clamped his hand around my arm and refused to let go. His face was flushed red, his teeth clenched so hard his jaw trembled, and he had balled one hand into a fist so tightly that blood was beginning to seep between his fingers.

But I felt not the slightest pity for him.

Because I knew that if I did anything softhearted now, if I gave him even the slightest wrong impression, this

would never end.

So I shoved him away hard.

“Gavin, how many times do I have to say it? This is over.”

“No, it’s not,” he said hoarsely. “You said your love for me would never change. We still have Lily. We were supposed to travel to every romantic place in the world. We were supposed to have a whole future together.”

His eyes were full of raw, stubborn desperation.

In the end, I slapped him across the face, hoping the sting might knock some sense into him.

He stared at me in shock, one hand pressed to his cheek, looking almost deranged.

“You’ve never hit me before,” he whispered. “Never.”

That was true.

I had never been able to bring myself to hit him, and I never would have dared to.

He had once been my everything. My whole world.

Before this, let alone slapping him, if anyone else had dared lay a finger on him, I would never have let it go

easily.

But now I had struck him myself.

“Gavin, look at yourself.”

“You look insane. Who could possibly love this?”

He froze, then rushed to say, “I’ll change. I’ll be normal again. Please, just don’t leave me.”

Lily wrapped herself around my leg and cried, “Mom, please don’t go. Mom, don’t go.”

For a moment, I didn’t know what to do. I let out a quiet sigh.

Then Ethan stepped forward.

“If she doesn’t want you here, why are you still pestering her?” he said.

“Besides, she already has a new boyfriend. So what’s the point of keeping this up?”

At that, Gavin and Lily both turned to glare at Ethan.

Ethan froze for a second, swallowed hard, then straightened his back and said, “What are you looking at? I

am. So what?”
Gavin burst out laughing, his eyes full of ridicule as he looked Ethan up and down.

“Do you even know who she is? She’s my wife-”

Before he could finish, Ethan’s clear voice rang through the entire classroom.

“She’s Autumn Young. Autumn, like the season.”

There was tension and stubborn courage shining in Ethan’s eyes, and I couldn’t help laughing.

Gavin’s expression changed at once. As if he desperately needed me to deny it, he forced out a strained

smile.

“It’s not true, Autumn. Tell me none of this is true.”

Lily looked just as shaken. “Mom, he’s lying, right?”

I looked into Ethan’s clear eyes, full of hope and fear at once, and let out a soft sigh.

Then I slipped an arm around his shoulders and said quietly, “You can see it for yourself. He doesn’t like seeing me talk to other men, so you should probably go.”

“But-”

Gavin had barely opened his mouth when I cut him off.

“If you love someone, you don’t cling to her and trap her. You set her free.”

“I’ll leave you with that. I hope one day you find someone who’s right for you.”

The moment I said it, Gavin let out a bitter laugh.

He knew then that he had no chance anymore.

There was no chance left at all.

But whose fault was that?

Gavin left in a daze with Lily, both of them looking utterly defeated, and soon only Ethan and I were left

behind.

He kept his head lowered, too afraid to look at me. Fear filled his eyes, and he just stood there blankly, hardly daring to meet my gaze.

Looking at him like that, I almost laughed.

A second ago, he had been so brave. Now he couldn’t say a single word.

“Ethan…”

Before I could finish, he squeezed his eyes shut and blurted out, “I just wanted to help you. I didn’t think that far ahead. Don’t worry. I’m not going to cling to you because of this.”

“I told you before. No matter what happens, I’ll protect you.”

He turned as if he meant to leave, but I caught his wrist, held onto his arm, and said softly, “I’m not in the habit of saying things I don’t mean.”

“So from now on, you’re my boyfriend.”

“Unless you’re planning to dump me.”

At that, he jerked his head up in a panic. “I would never-”

Then he caught the teasing look in my eyes and seemed to realize what I meant. His expression turned

serious.

“Autumn, my feelings for you are real. I’ll treasure you.”

After saying that, he lowered his head again and fell silent.

The children around us immediately started cheering and chanting for us to kiss.

Even the elders outside were looking at us with warm, kindly smiles.

I rose onto my toes and kissed Ethan gently, feeling the careful tenderness of the way he kissed me back.

Maybe staying here really was a good thing.
