Damien picked Vivian up from the hospital the day she was discharged.

The orderly wheeled her to the car.

Without looking at him, Vivian braced herself against the doorframe and slowly climbed into the back seat

on her own.

She didn’t say a single word.

Damien folded the wheelchair and placed it in the trunk before getting behind the wheel.

He glanced at her through the rearview mirror.

“Vivian…”

“Have you found out about Ethan yet?”

Her voice was calm.

Damien froze.

“The last sentence in Clara’s letter.”

Vivian kept staring ahead.

“Did you look into it?”

His hand remained motionless on the steering wheel.

He had.

Of course he had.

Ethan Rhodes.

Vivian’s college boyfriend.

Three years older than she was.

They had dated for two years before trying long distance for six months and eventually breaking up.

Something inside Damien quietly collapsed.

His throat tightened.

Vivian leaned against the seat and looked out the window.

After a long silence, she answered.

His breathing stopped.

“Ethan dumped me.”

“He told me I was nobody.”

“He said I’d never be good enough for someone like him.”

“I got drunk that night.”

“I stood on the rooftop with nothing in my head except his words.”

“I wasn’t thinking about you.”

Damien’s face slowly turned white in the rearview mirror.

“But after I woke up…”

Her voice softened.

“You were there.”

“You stayed with me every day.”

“You cried.”

“You kept apologizing.”

“You kept saying it was all your fault.”

“I was covered in tubes.”

“The doctors told me I’d spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair.”

She finally lifted her eyes to meet his in the mirror.

“So I let you believe you were the reason I jumped.”

The silence inside the car became suffocating.

Damien’s fingers slowly tightened around the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white.

For six years he had carried that guilt.

For six years he had tried to make amends.

He had destroyed his marriage.

He had sacrificed four unborn children.

He had driven away the woman who loved him.

All because of a lie.

“You lied to me.”

The words scraped out between clenched teeth.

Vivian neither looked away nor cried.

“Yes.”

“I lied.”

“But you believed me.”

“You never even bothered to find out what actually happened that day.”

“You chose the easiest explanation.”

“You decided you were guilty.”

“You decided paying me back made you a good man.”

“And the price was your wife’s body…”

“…and the four children she carried.”

Damien whipped around to stare at her.

There was no triumph on Vivian’s face.

No hatred.

No satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

“So when Clara took my uterus…”

“I don’t hate her.”

“I deserved it.”

“Four lives in exchange for one uterus.”

“If anything…”

“I’m still the one who owes the greater debt.”

Damien stared at her.

His lips trembled for what felt like forever.

Not a single word came out.

Vivian turned back toward the window.

Her voice became almost indifferent.

“Take me home.”

“And don’t come back.”

“Whatever existed between us…”

“It’s over.”

Damien didn’t start the car.

He remained in the driver’s seat as both hands slowly slipped from the steering wheel.

Then he bent forward until his forehead rested against it.

His shoulders shook silently.

Not a sound escaped him.

Vivian never looked back.

A long time later, the engine finally started.

They drove the entire way home without another word.
