He Signed My Death, So I Left His World Forever Chapter 02

The sharp click of high heels sounded in the hallway before my hospital room door opened again.

Nina had come back alone. Enzo was nowhere in sight.

The timid, wounded look vanished from her face, replaced by undisguised smugness and malice.

The fever had left me too weak to sit up.

Nina walked up to my bed and idly toyed with my IV tubing.

“Aw, you poor thing.”

“Did you know Enzo was just out in the hallway complaining about how dramatic you are?”

She leaned closer, lowering her voice to a taunting whisper.

“He said you couldn’t hold a candle to me.”

I struggled to open my eyes and gave her a cold stare.

“Are you done?”

“Then get out. Now.”

Instead of getting angry, Nina grinned even wider.

“Still got that temper, Aubrey.”

“But that’s okay. You won’t be so arrogant for much longer.”

She pulled a palm-sized computer from her purse and rapidly tapped a few keys on its tiny keyboard.

“Enzo thinks you’re faking it, but I’m not so sure.”

“How about I make your condition look a little more serious?”

As soon as she finished speaking, the bedside monitor erupted in a shrill alarm.

Its warning lights flashed as the readings swung wildly.

She wasn’t just a hacker. She was completely unhinged and had no conscience whatsoever.

Hurried footsteps sounded in the hallway.

“What’s going on?!”

Enzo rushed in with the medical staff.

“Enzo! I don’t know what happened! I didn’t do anything!”

“The monitor just started going off! It scared me!”

She threw herself into Enzo’s arms and burst into tears.

Enzo wrapped his arms around her and gently rubbed her back to calm her down.

The doctor rushed to my bedside, frantically checking the equipment.

“That’s strange. Her vital signs are normal. Why is the monitor going off?”

Sweating profusely, the doctor restarted the monitor.

The readings immediately returned to normal.

After comforting Nina, he turned toward me, his eyes blazing with fury.

“Aubrey, when are you going to stop this?!”

“You’re so desperate to make me stay that you’d stoop to something this pathetic?”

“Tampering with hospital equipment? Do you have any idea how much of the medical staff’s time you’re wasting?!”

“You think I did this?”

I barely had the strength to lift my hand. How was I supposed to hack a monitor?

“Who else would it be?”

“You’re so jealous of Nina that you’ll do anything to frame her!”

He strode over to my bed and ripped the blanket off me.

“Get up!”

“Apologize to Nina. Right now!”

I looked up at him as though he were already dead to me.

“Enzo, what is wrong with you?”

He froze.

In seven years of marriage, I’d never spoken to him like that.

I’d always been gentle, understanding, and willing to give in.

“Did you just insult me?”

He spoke through clenched teeth, unable to believe what he’d heard.

“I called you a fool.”

I calmly reached over and yanked the monitor’s power cord from the wall.

The shrill alarm stopped instantly.

“Next time Nina pulls a stunt like this and plays innocent, don’t come blaming me for it.”

I turned my back on him.

“The whole thing disgusts me.”

Enzo clenched his fists so tightly that his knuckles cracked.

“Fine. Just fine.”

“Aubrey, if you’re so determined to act tough, then stay here by yourself!”

“Let’s see how long you can keep up that attitude!”

He grabbed Nina’s hand and stormed out.

“Enzo, does Aubrey really hate me that much?”

“Ignore her. She’s insane.”

I closed my eyes.

“System, how much time do I have left?”

[Time remaining: 60 hours.]

“Good,” I said with a faint smile. “Almost there.”
