He Signed My Death, So I Left His World Forever Chapter 01

My husband, Enzo Rosetti, had an adopted sister who was always causing trouble.

For the past seven or eight years, he’d cleaned up every mess she made.

Then she tampered with my car’s safety system. My car was wrecked, and I barely survived the crash.

At the hospital, Enzo sighed as he signed a consent form.

“Don’t blame Nina. She was just having fun. She wasn’t actually trying to kill you.”

“She knew I’d hired the best medical team for you. She just wanted to give you a scare.”

He’d barely finished signing when Vincent, the family’s consigliere, told him someone had upset Nina at a private nightclub downtown.

Enzo dropped his pen and rushed out.

He was in such a hurry that he didn’t even notice he’d approved the wrong transfusion.

The System, silent for so long, suddenly activated.

[The male lead’s mistake has triggered the final stage of your mission. The countdown begins now.]

I looked at the transfusion bag the nurse had brought over and smiled.

“Let’s begin.”

…

“Mrs. Rosetti, your transfusion is ready,” the nurse said.

She checked the paperwork beside my bed.

“My husband signed everything himself?” I asked.

“Yes, Mrs. Rosetti.”

I looked at Enzo’s signature and fell silent.

The System’s familiar, emotionless voice sounded in my head.

[Mission countdown activated.]

[Time remaining: 72 hours.]

Within half an hour, a sharp pain gripped my lower back.

Then the chills started. I pulled the blanket tightly around myself.

Just then, the hospital room door flew open, and Enzo strode in.

The smell of cologne and liquor clung to him, strong enough to make me nauseous. There were even a few cheap, brightly colored sequins stuck to the collar of his expensive, custom-made shirt.

Nina followed close behind, completely unharmed.

She wore a revealing sequined dress, her eyes still red. Clutching Enzo’s sleeve, she looked like a frightened little girl.

“What’s your problem this time?”

Enzo stopped beside my bed and looked down at me, his expression tight with impatience.

“The doctor said you only had a few minor injuries. Who’s all this shaking supposed to fool?”

I gritted my teeth through another agonizing wave of pain in my lower back. Cold sweat had broken out across my forehead.

“I’m cold,” I managed through clenched teeth.

Enzo scoffed and tugged irritably at his tie.

“Cold? It’s almost eighty degrees in here, and you’re telling me you’re cold?”

He turned toward Nina, his voice instantly softening.

“Nina, turn off the AC so Aubrey can’t use that as another excuse.”

Nina nodded obediently and switched it off at the wall.

“Aubrey, I’m sorry. I really didn’t mean to tamper with your car.”

“I just wanted to see if this little program I’d written would work.”

“Enzo already gave me a talking-to. Can you please stop being mad at me?”

Tears began rolling down her cheeks.

Enzo drew her protectively behind him, blocking my view of her.

“Enough. You don’t owe her an apology.”

“She’s lying there perfectly fine, isn’t she?”

“Aubrey, some guy at the club tried to take advantage of Nina.”

“She was scared out of her mind, and she still came all the way here to apologize to you.”

“And you can’t even manage a smile? You’re being completely unreasonable.”

The sheer nerve of him almost made me laugh.

My car had smashed through a guardrail on a mountain road and nearly plunged off a cliff.

I’d barely survived the trip to the hospital.

Yet all he cared about was whether his precious sister had been upset at a nightclub.

“She was scared?”

“She went out drinking and dancing, and some guy hit on her. That’s supposed to be traumatic?”

“What about me? I almost died in that car. Doesn’t that count for anything?”

Enzo’s expression darkened, his disgust now completely undisguised.

“Could you stop talking about dying for once?”

“I got you the best doctors wealth can buy, didn’t I?”

“Besides, your car has top-of-the-line crash protection. Nina knew you’d be fine.”

I looked at the IV line. Enzo’s mistake was already taking its toll.

She’d even counted on me dying today.

“Enzo.”

“What if I really did die?”

He paused, but his surprise quickly gave way to irritation.

“There you go again.”

“Every time Nina makes one little mistake, you pull the ‘I’m going to die’ card to guilt-trip me.”

“Aubrey, do you have any idea how exhausting you are?”

He pulled up a chair, sat down, and crossed his legs.

“Enough with the act.”

“If you’re really feeling that bad, I’ll have the doctor give you some more pain medication.”

“Nina’s had a terrible scare today, and I’m staying with her tonight. You can stay here and think about how you’ve been behaving.”

My temperature climbed and my vision blurred.

Each breath hurt more than the last.

“Do you think Aubrey really isn’t feeling well?”

Nina tugged at Enzo’s sleeve and peeked out from behind him.

“Her face is so red. Do you think she’s running a fever?”

Enzo barely glanced at me.

“Fever? She’s just worked herself up.”

“She’s mad because I didn’t stay here with her.”

He got to his feet and approached my bed, staring down at me coldly.

“Aubrey, I’m warning you for the last time.”

“Stop these petty little jealousy games.”

“Nina is my sister. Of course I’m going to protect her.”

“If you keep treating her like this, don’t expect me to show you any consideration just because we’re married.”

I gave him a weak smile.

“Fine.”

“Then make sure you take very good care of her.”

“Come on. Don’t bother with her. She’s crazy.”

The door slammed shut behind them.

I looked at the nearly empty transfusion bag and closed my eyes.

“System, set pain suppression to maximum.”

[Confirmed, Host. Maximum pain suppression active.]

[Enjoy your journey.]
