He Signed Me As Nanny Not Wife For Ten Years Chapter 02

With bloodshot eyes, I carried Nellie through every hospital and clinic I could find.

But because she had no legal status, I could not even buy a bottle of fever reducer.

”Undocumented? Get out. We don’t sell medicine to people like you.”

”People like you are the reason the city gets dirty and dangerous. Go die somewhere else.”

The pale little girl in my arms struggled to lift her hand and touch my face.

Her voice was thin as breath. ”Mommy, I want to sleep.”

I held her tighter and forced an ugly smile onto my face.

”Sleep, sweetheart. When you wake up, we’ll be home.”

Nellie closed her eyes.

But she never opened them again.

That night, I did not know how long I wandered the streets like a ghost.

I wanted to walk faster.

If I could just get home, everything would be fine.

If I could just get home, my daughter could be saved.

But I never made it home.

At the end of the road, immigration officers were waiting to arrest and deport me.

My visa had expired two weeks earlier.

I searched every pocket on my body, only to realize the only thing that could prove who I was was the marriage certificate Adrian had given me.

After checking the records, the officer told me, ”This marriage certificate is fake.”

”Evelyn Hart, you are being charged with document fraud and overstaying your visa. A deportation order has been issued.”

”You are being formally removed from the country.”

I collapsed in the cold holding room.

Even though I already knew the answer, a broken sob still clawed its way out of my throat.

So Adrian’s dependent visa had belonged to Sienna from the very beginning.

In the dark, damp transport hold, I curled into myself without thinking.

Through the cracks, brilliant fireworks bloomed one after another.

”Look at that. Some people get treated like dirt from the day they’re born.”

”And some women are lucky enough to have fireworks put on for them all night.”

I slowly lifted my gaze.

Not far away, on a glittering luxury cruise boat, Adrian and Sienna stood shoulder to shoulder, their fingers intertwined.

A vicious pain tore through my heart.

Then I came back to myself and met the hospital director’s doubtful gaze.

My voice was steady. ”I’ve thought it through, Director. My family is not a burden. Adrian will agree.”

Seeing how determined I was, he put away the application.

”All right. Go home and prepare. You leave in three days.”

I froze for a moment.

That was the exact day Adrian was scheduled to leave for New York.

Fine.

From now on, he would go to Manhattan.

I would go to the rural Southwest.

In this life and every life after it, we would never meet again.
