He Scorned Me, Now I’m a CEO He Can’t Afford Chapter 33

Even his voice had changed slightly.

But Lena didn’t notice, because her phone began to vibrate.

The caller ID showed Hank, the old housekeeper from Red Creek Ranch.

Her heart tightened.

“Sorry, I have to take this.” She nodded at Logan and walked quickly toward the parking lot.

Logan stood where he was, watching her go, his grip slowly tightening on his phone.

After a long moment, he murmured, “It really is you.”

“Lena, girl, you finally answered.”

As soon as she picked up, Hank’s hoarse, relieved voice came through the line.

Lena’s heart softened.

Hank had been at the ranch since her mother was alive, the only person in that house who had ever sincerely cared for her.

“I’m doing fine, Hank. The project’s been keeping me busy.” She leaned against her pickup, the night wind blowing away the last of her unease.

“Of course you’re doing well.” Hank’s voice was full of pride. “I’ve heard all about it. The whole town is buzzing. They’re saying the mystery winner from the Agricultural Gazette is you.”

Lena wasn’t surprised.

Not much happened at Red Creek Ranch that Hank didn’t know about.
