He had always treated Clara as the one who needed protecting, while he, again and again, had crushed the person who was truly wounded.

The thought was a physical pain in his chest.

He stared at Clara, his voice dropping lower.

“And the state agricultural competition. You said Lena reported you, that she tried to get you disqualified. That was a lie too, wasn’t it?”

“There was no report. You lost on your own. You lost to the girl you swore knew nothing.”

“And the barn dance,” Wyatt continued, his voice sinking. “The bet, the saddle… you made it all up, didn’t you?”

So many vague memories suddenly snapped into sharp focus.

At last, he understood just how many times he had wronged Lena because of a few of Clara’s tears.

How many times he had trampled on the honest, straightforward affection she had offered him.

Clara looked at him and knew the act was over.

She slowly dropped the pitiful expression, and a cold smile touched her lips.

“Wyatt, why are you pretending to be so noble now?” she said, her eyes boring into his. “You say I hurt Lena. Why don’t you ask yourself a few questions first?”

“In that accident with the bull, who was the first one to throw Lena under the bus?”
