Sharon was still complaining, and Caleb was still raging.

But Wyatt couldn’t hear them anymore.

Only one sentence echoed in his mind.

*She went across the river to start a company.*

A company.

Why?

Hadn’t she always wanted to do these things with him?

Hadn’t she always talked about putting their ranches together?

Shouldn’t she have come to him, crying or screaming, at least staying somewhere he could find her?

Why had she just gone across the river?

Wyatt suddenly stood and strode toward the door.

Sharon tried to stop him.

“Wyatt, where are you going? The reporters are out there—”

He didn’t listen.

The reporters swarmed him, a wall of flashbulbs and microphones.

“Mr. Wyatt! Is Miss Vance’s departure related to you?”

“There are rumors you were involved in framing her. Is that true?”

Wyatt didn’t answer.

He pushed through the crowd, jumped into his Ford pickup, and slammed his foot on the gas, heading for the highway to Austin.

He was going to the state agricultural competition committee.
