He Saved A Dog But Let His Wife’s Father Die Chapter 05

The sharp tang of antiseptic dragged me back to wakefulness. I blinked slowly, finding myself lying in a hospital bed.

A nurse beside me brightened when she saw my eyes open. “You’re awake. Good news—you’re pregnant.”

Right then, the ward door swung open. Joseph stepped inside.

He held the folder I’d asked Ava to deliver and tossed it onto my bed.

His brow was furrowed. “I signed your papers. But real estate paperwork is personal business. Don’t bring it to the hospital for Ava to see—it looks unprofessional.”

I almost laughed. Assuming they were the property documents, he’d signed them without a second glance.

I slipped the agreement into my bag. The heavy weight I’d carried for so long finally lifted from my shoulders.

Seeing me stay silent, Joseph’s expression softened slightly. “Rest up. I have rounds this afternoon, so I need to leave.”

I stared at his calm face and spoke softly. “Joseph, aren’t you curious why I’m in this hospital bed?”

Joseph paused briefly, then replied flatly. “It’s just low blood sugar. Get some rest and head home soon. There’s no need to take up a bed for something this minor.”

I went still, a dull, suffocating pain squeezing my chest.

I parted my lips, ready to tell him about the baby. The ward door pushed open again.

A young military surgeon hurried inside, anxiety etched on his face.

“Dr. York! Patient thirty-two’s condition is worsening. The family is furious and threatening to attack Nurse Ava—you need to come right away!”

Joseph’s expression shifted. Without a moment’s hesitation, he turned and rushed out.

I watched his urgent retreating back, closed my eyes, and made up my mind.

I pressed the call button for the attending nurse. “I need to schedule a termination.”

The surgery was booked for the following morning. I headed home for the night.

I gave away the potted plants I’d tended for years to a fellow service spouse, and listed all the jewelry and handbags Joseph had gifted me on resale apps.

The closet, once stuffed with his gifts, now echoed with emptiness.

Joseph came home at ten that night. A gash crossed his forehead, a bruise marked his cheek, and thick bandages wrapped his right arm.

Ava supported him as they walked in. Her eyes were red, as if she’d been crying.

“Camilla, a patient’s family got violent today. Joseph hurt himself protecting me. You have to take good care of him.”

I glanced at her and spoke evenly. “If you’re so worried, you can stay here and look after him.”

Ava’s face flushed, fresh tears spilling over. “That’s not what I meant… Joseph and I are just colleagues.”
