He Satisfies His Enemies—I Bury Them Chapter 07

I handled Volkov in forty-eight hours.

Not with violence. With information.

During my years running the Moretti empire, I’d built files on every rival organization-financial records, personal secrets, leverage. Dante used to call them “insurance policies,” never knowing I was the one

paying the premiums.

I still had everything.

One encrypted email to Volkov containing evidence of his money laundering through Baltic shipping companies-evidence that would destroy him if it reached Europol-and the threat vanished overnight.

His men disappeared from Barcelona. A formal apology came through intermediaries. Done.

Dante heard about it through his own channels. He didn’t try to take credit. Didn’t insert himself. Didn’t

play wounded alpha.

He texted two words: “Impressive work.”

I didn’t respond. But I didn’t delete it.

Something was shifting inside me, and it had nothing to do with Dante.

In New York, I’d been invisible. The architect behind the throne. I’d told myself that working from the

shadows was strategic-that it was power, not submission.

It wasn’t. It was fear.

Fear that if I stepped into the light, I’d be found wanting. Fear that my value existed only in service to someone else. Fear that Seraphina alone-without Dante, without the Moretti name-was nothing.

Barcelona had destroyed that lie.

I was not nothing. I was everything. And now I had to decide what to do with that knowledge

My consulting business was exploding. Eight months in, and I was advising some of Europe’s wealthiest families on asset protection, wealth structuring, cross-border finance. Marta had hired three

more analysts. We needed a bigger office.

I found a space in a converted warehouse near Port Olímpic-exposed brick, floor-to-ceiling windows, the Mediterranean visible from every desk. I signed the lease on a Thursday.

That afternoon, I crossed the street to Dante’s café. Sat down. Ordered my own cortado.

“I’m expanding,” I said.

“I heard. The warehouse on Carrer de la Marina.”

“You looked it up?”

“I look up everything about you now. Old habit, reversed.”

We sat in silence. Comfortable. Not the silence of being ignored-the silence of two people who’d

stopped needing to fill the air.

“I’m going back to New York next week,” he said.

Something tightened in my chest. I ignored it.

“The family needs its boss.”

“What’s left of it.” He stared at his espresso. “I’ve been restructuring. Going legitimate. Shutting down the drug routes, the weapons, all of it.”

“That’s ambitious.”

“It’s necessary. The old model doesn’t work without-” He stopped.

“Without me?”

“Without the systems you built. But more than that-without the vision you had. You always saw what we could become. I only saw what we were.”

“And what are you now?”

“Smaller. Cleaner. Poorer.” He met my eyes. “Better.”

I studied him. Searching for the performance, the angle, the con.

Finding nothing.

“I believe you,” I said.

“But?”

“But believing you doesn’t change what happened.”

He nodded. Accepted it.

“Are you happy, Valentina?”

I thought about it honestly. My business. My apartment. My mornings on the balcony with coffee and the sea. My life that belonged entirely to me.

“Yes,” I said. “I’m happy.”

“Then that’s enough.”

He stood. Left money on the table. Walked away.

I watched him disappear around the corner and felt something crack open inside me-not love, not

forgiveness, but something more dangerous than both.

Understanding.

I understood him now. He understood me.

And understanding is the cruelest thing. Because it shows you exactly what could have been, if only the people had been braver, if only the timing had been right, if only love alone were enough.
