He Satisfies His Enemies—I Bury Them Chapter 06

I tried to forget he was there. I couldn’t.

Dante Moretti sitting in a Barcelona café, day after day, learning patience for the first time in his violent life-it was impossible to ignore.

He stopped sending gifts the moment I asked. No pushback. No manipulation. No sulking.

Just stillness. Just waiting.

It drove me insane.

Three weeks after our café conversation, everything changed.

I was leaving my office late-past midnight, after finalizing a deal with a Portuguese client. The Eixample streets were empty, all shuttered storefronts and amber lamplight.

I turned the corner and walked into three men.

They weren’t muggers. The formation was too clean-one center, two flanking. Military precision. The lead man spoke English with a Russian accent.

“Seraphina Moretti.”

My dead name. Adrenaline flooded my bloodstream.

“Wrong person.”

“No. Right person. Volkov sends a message. Your husband killed his nephew in the port dispute. He cannot reach your husband. But he can reach you.”

The center man drew a blade. The flanking two closed in.

My mind went cold. Clinical. Three attackers. Knife range-six feet. My Glock was in my bag, right side pocket, safety off. But drawing it meant dropping my guard for one point five seconds.

I didn’t need the gun.

The first man lunged. I stepped left, caught his wrist, rotated his arm past the breaking point. The joint snapped. He screamed and the knife clattered to the pavement.

The second charged. I drove my palm into his nose-felt cartilage collapse-then hooked his ankle and put him on the ground. Hard.

The third pulled a gun.

I was faster.

My Glock was in my hand before his cleared his waistband. I aimed center mass.

“Tell Volkov that Seraphina Moretti is dead,” I said. My voice didn’t shake. “The woman standing here is not someone he wants to find again.”

He ran. His friends crawled after him, leaving blood on the cobblestones.

I stood alone in the empty street, gun raised, pulse hammering-not from fear but from the savage clarity of being exactly what I was.

Not a quiet wife. Not a shadow. A woman who could ruin you with a spreadsheet or a bullet, and the only question was which one you preferred.

“How long?” I said without turning around.

Dante stepped from the darkness behind me.

“Long enough to know you didn’t need me.”

I lowered the Glock. “Were you following me?”

“Walking back to my hotel. Heard the voices.” He looked at the blood on the pavement. “Volkov?

“Yes.”

His jaw clenched. Old Dante would have erupted-phone calls, mobilized soldiers, war declared before sunrise. This Dante just looked at me.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Can I walk you home?”

I should have said no.

“Fine.”

We walked through sleeping Barcelona, footsteps echoing off stone. The silence between us was different now-charged, electric, alive.

“You fight like you were trained from childhood,” he said.

“I was. My father believed women should be more dangerous than the men who underestimate them.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“You never asked. You never asked me anything, Dante. Not what I could do. Not what I dreamed about. Not who I was beneath the role you needed me to play.”

“I know.”

“Do you? Because knowing and understanding are different things.”

We reached my building. I unlocked the door.

“The Volkov situation-I’ll handle it myself.”

“I wasn’t going to interfere. You clearly don’t need me to.”

I looked at him Really looked. The arrogance was gone. The entitlement. The casual cruelty of a rnan who believed the world was his birthright.

What remained was rawer. Almost human.

“Goodnight, Dante.”

“Goodnight, Valentina.”

I closed the door. Leaned against it.

Something was shifting. Something I couldn’t control.

Something that terrified me more than three men with knives ever could.
