Sometime past midnight, I was jolted awake by pounding on the door.

“Natalie, have you lost your mind?! How far are you going to push Naomi?!”

Ethan started accusing me of cyberbullying Naomi.

I was confused.

I opened the link he’d sent. It was a social media account.

Full of chat logs—daily life with her “bro.”

The latest post was an apology, saying she’d delete everything after one day.

A screenshot of a comment from a mutual friend read:

[Hey, that profile pic looks like Ethan. Is this Natalie’s alt? Pretty unique way to start an account lol.]

“Naomi was just documenting things. Why couldn’t you talk to her nicely? You had to have someone make snide remarks…”

I ignored his accusations and slammed the door shut.

I scrolled through the account in silence.

Chat after chat, from complaining about the weather to sharing music.

None of it seemed like something Ethan would do.

He used to say he hated chatting, but he even used his own data to add a chat feature to the AI program for me.

I named it “E.”

“When I’m not around or can’t reply right away, let E keep you company, okay?”

I was so touched. Even my best friend gushed with envy. “Is this the romance of a tech guy? When do I get one?!”

But now I understood—it wasn’t that he hated chatting.

He just couldn’t be bothered to chat with me.

I opened the program and realized how much I’d stupidly poured into it.

When I was sick, Ethan said he was working late.

He ordered a bunch of stomach medicine, but hadn’t noticed I said I had a fever.

I told myself that startups are busy, and messaged the AI.

[E, I feel so awful.]

[Don’t be scared. I’m right here with you. If you’re feeling rough, try some tea or a warm shower, okay?]

A simple line like that could make me smile.

But what was Ethan doing then?

In Naomi’s post, he was standing in line to buy her the new mini cakes from a shop downtown.

Ethan always said he hated waiting in line.

I scrolled through every detail, torturing myself.

At first, the comments were all shipping them. Then our friend’s comment got bumped up.

That latest apology post was flooded with hate comments aimed at her.

[WTF, I shipped them for so long and now you’re telling me she’s the other woman???]

Naomi’s voice message apology came right after.

“Natalie, I’m so sorry. I just wanted to document our daily life. I never thought…”

“We’re always together day and night, so we get a bit close sometimes. I’m really sorry! Please stop having people attack me! I can’t take it!”

In the background, I could hear Ethan’s voice.

“You didn’t do anything wrong. Why are you apologizing?”
