He Said My Money Stank, So I Let His Career Stink Without It Chapter 07

“I never rejected you, did I? I was planning to wait until this project ended, until I was more established. I couldn’t let people say I got where I am because of you.” 

Some people really did find new heights of shamelessness. 

Nathaniel was living proof that once a man became shameless enough, there was no bottom left to hit. 

I was too speechless to bother with him, but he took my silence as a sign that I was backing down. His voice rose at 

once. 

“Now everyone thinks I’m a fraud. It took me five years to get here, and you destroyed all of it in one night.” 

“This is what you call loving me? You did this. You ruined me, and you’re going to take responsibility for it.” 

Before I could say anything, a laugh slipped out from outside 

the door. 

Nathaniel and I both turned toward the sound. 

Adrian slowly stepped out. 

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt, but that was honestly too funny to hold in.” 

“Dr. Blake, I thought stealing my paper back in school and 

deleting my experimental data from my computer was already about as shameless as a person could get.” 

“I didn’t realize you were also an expert at mooching off a woman while acting morally superior. Consider me educated.” 

“No wonder our mentor got so angry he refused to let you call yourself his student. Now I get it.” 

This time, even I laughed. 

I suddenly remembered that Adrian had once said he was good 

at arguing. 

Apparently, he had not been joking. 

As for Nathaniel, Adrian nearly made him choke on his own 

anger. 

Nathaniel pointed a trembling finger at Adrian. 

“You think you’re any better? Evelyn Hart gets bored fast.” 

“Right now, she just thinks you’re new and interesting. She’s 

treating you like a toy. Once she gets bored, she’ll toss you aside too. What are you so smug about?” 

Nathaniel’s words made my chest tighten. 

I had never known that this was how he defined what had 

existed between us. 

I was also afraid those words would affect Adrian. After all, 

finding someone this suitable to clean up Nathaniel’s mess would not be easy. 

To my surprise, Adrian only gave him an easy, unbothered 

look. 

“Isn’t that worth being smug about?” 

Nathaniel went still. 

Then Adrian continued. 

“After all, I’m the new toy. You’re the old toy she threw 

away.” 

“And I know how to be sweet, and I’m much easier to get 

along with. Naturally, I’m more likable‘ than you. I doubt Ms. Hart would throw me away after only three years.” 

Now it was my turn to be surprised. 

So when Adrian first met me, had all that nervous 

awkwardness been an act? 

Was he actually the kind of man who looked harmless on the 

outside but had a wicked streak underneath? 

Nathaniel could not outtalk him. He stood there breathing 

hard, glaring at me for a long time before finally forcing out 

one sentence. 

“Evelyn Hart, you’re going to regret this.” 

I had no interest in watching him rage uselessly, so I picked up my bag and walked toward the door. 

As I passed him, he grabbed my wrist. 

“You haven’t explained yourself. You’re not leaving.” 

My gaze dropped to his hand, then rose to his face. 

“Let go.” 

He did not move. 

Footsteps sounded at the door. 

Dr. Warren walked in, followed by two people. 

One was in uniform, and the other carried a briefcase. 

“Dr. Nathaniel Blake.” 

The uniformed officer spoke in a flat, emotionless voice. 

“We have received a report concerning your suspected misuse 

of research funds and embezzlement. Please come with us and 

cooperate with the investigation.” 

Nathaniel’s hand loosened. 

He stood rooted in place, his eyes darting from the two people 

to me. His lips trembled for a long time before he finally forced 

out a few words. 

“You… you reported me?” 

I said nothing. 

Adrian nodded. 

“I did. Under my real name.” 

The uniformed officer stepped forward and presented the 

documents. 

Nathaniel took a step back and bumped into the table. Papers 

scattered across the floor. 

He lowered his head and stared at the documents spread 

across the floor as his shoulders began to shake. 

Then his tear–filled eyes lifted to mine. 

“Evelyn.” 

His voice was hoarse, as if it had been scraped out of his throat. 

“You can’t just abandon me. You can’t stand by and watch 

them do this to me.” 

I met his tearful gaze without flinching.
