He Said My Money Stank, So I Let His Career Stink Without It Chapter 01

To support Nathaniel Blake’s medical research, I funded a state-of-the-art surgical suite for the hospital and poured well into eight figures into his work overall.

Yet whenever I ran into him at the hospital, his face was always cold. He would not even spare me a second glance.

I told myself that serious researchers were just like that, distant and above all the noise, so I quietly tolerated his arrogance.

Until the day he decided to use the surgical suite I had funded to perform an appendectomy on one of his female students.

Nathaniel personally adjusted her hospital gown, his voice so gentle it was almost tender.

“Don’t be scared. I’m here. Nothing is going to happen to you.”

The department chief could not help reminding him, “Dr. Blake, this procedure can be done in a standard OR.”

Nathaniel looked up and saw me walking over. His voice went cold at once. “If I say this OR is available, then it is. Anyone who has a problem can take it up with me.”

When he passed me, he lowered his voice and said, “No matter how much money you throw around, you’ll never wash off that stink of cash. This is not a place for someone like you.”

The student lay on the operating table and gave me a smug smile.

“I heard this OR was built for special cases only. Once it opens, every second costs a fortune. But Dr. Blake said I could be his exception.”

I ignored her provocation and went straight to the hospital president’s office.

Then I handed the project I had originally prepared for Nathaniel to the junior colleague he had spent the past five years suppressing.

Since he looked down on my money so much, I would simply take it all back.

After I gave the order to cut off all funding for Nathaniel, my assistant contacted me right away.

[Dr. Blake’s three projects have all been suspended. What should we do about the ones already in progress?]

Replace him, of course.

The research funding, the lab, and even the special OR he had used for Lily Parker all had to be reassigned.

Since he considered himself too pure to associate with me, I would find someone competent instead.

[Do you have anyone in mind, Ms. Hart?]

One person came to mind.

Adrian Hayes.

Nathaniel’s junior colleague, and the man Nathaniel hated most.

Back then, Nathaniel had been senior to Adrian, but their mentor had always favored Adrian more. Later, after I publicly backed Nathaniel, he had used my influence more than once to target Adrian, both openly and behind the scenes.

Actually, I had met Adrian before.

A year ago, he had published a paper with a highly practical clinical focus. At the time, I had no idea about the history between them, so I suggested bringing Adrian into Nathaniel’s project team.

Nathaniel lost his temper on the spot.

“With his level of ability, you want him in my group? Evelyn, do you even understand what research is?”

After that, Nathaniel did not speak to me for three months.

It was not until I approved another three million dollars in new equipment for him that he finally “forgave” me, as if he were doing me a favor.

Thinking of that, I replied to my assistant.

[Reach out to Adrian Hayes.]

The next evening, there was an academic gala.

As the institute’s star researcher, Nathaniel sat in the front row, surrounded by people praising him. When it was his turn to give a speech, his voice was calm and measured.

“I’d like to thank the hospital president, my mentor, and the hospital for their support.”

Applause rose from the audience.

His acknowledgments went on for five full minutes.

“Lastly, I’d like to thank every friend who cares about the future of medical research.”

Not once did he mention me.

Someone nearby began whispering.

“Isn’t Ms. Hart the biggest sponsor? Why didn’t he thank her?”

“I heard Dr. Blake doesn’t want anything to do with her. He thinks she’s clingy.”

“You didn’t know? Ms. Hart has been chasing Dr. Blake, but Dr. Blake doesn’t like women like her. If it weren’t for the research funding, he probably wouldn’t even be able to stand looking at her.”

I stood up, planning to step out onto the balcony for some air.

Just as I turned the corner, I heard footsteps behind me.

It was Nathaniel and the hospital president.

“Nathaniel, Evelyn Hart has done a lot for you. You should have at least mentioned her.”

Nathaniel was silent for two seconds.

“Dr. Warren is supposed to be pure,” Nathaniel said.

His voice was calm, as if he were stating a simple fact.

“She thinks having money means she can demand dinner one day and a meeting the next. She pushes so hard I can barely breathe.”

The president paused.

“She was only trying to introduce you to more people and open doors for your future.”

Nathaniel gave a soft, mocking laugh.
