He Said My Money Stank, So I Let His Career Stink Without It Chapter 03

In practice, every time I funded one of his projects, he would take me out to dinner as a token gesture.

But it was almost always in private, and on ordinary days, he never let me come to the hospital to see him.

So almost no one knew what our relationship really was.

In everyone else’s eyes, I was nothing more than Nathaniel’s pathetic admirer.

Sure enough, after Lily said that, whispers started spreading through the crowd.

“Ms. Hart is going way too far. Is this still about research, or is she treating the project like her personal dating pool?”

“Who does she think she is? Throwing money around is bad enough, but why meddle in the actual work?”

“Dr. Blake really does have integrity. He’s held his ground even after being chased by a woman like her for three years.”

“Who is this Adrian Hayes they’re talking about?”

“No idea. From the sound of it, he got ahead by riding Evelyn Hart’s coattails. What an embarrassment to real researchers.”

The murmurs grew louder, and the words became more and more vicious.

I yanked my hand free from Nathaniel’s grip.

Just as I was about to speak, Nathaniel’s phone started ringing again and again.

His face shifted, and he hurried away to take the call.

My gaze swept over the crowd, sharp and cold.

At that moment, Adrian walked over.

“Do you want me to explain?”

I gave him a look. “Would explaining help?”

Humor flickered across his face. “Maybe not, but I’m pretty decent in an argument.”

“No need. In a little while, they’ll shut up on their own.”

During the earlier confrontation with Nathaniel, wine had spilled on my dress, so I planned to change.

When I came out after changing, she was waiting there, visibly uneasy.

Half an hour later, my assistant arrived.

After I changed and came out, she stood there hesitating, looking at me with obvious unease.

“If something happened, say it.”

She gripped her phone tightly, as if working up the courage, then handed it to me.

I looked at the screen and drew in a quiet breath.

Nathaniel had posted a statement from his verified personal account.

The general meaning was that I, Evelyn, had stopped at nothing to chase him.

After shamelessly pestering him for five years, I had finally realized he would never bend for me, so I turned on him.

Not only had I maliciously shut down his projects, but I had also cut off funding for a critical experiment.

In his dramatic version of events, he had worked day and night on this experiment, all to develop a breakthrough heart-failure drug as soon as possible.

Once that drug came out, it would benefit tens of thousands of patients.

And now, according to him, I had destroyed everything.

The company’s official social accounts had already been swarmed.

Our stock was dropping by roughly one point every minute. In just ten minutes, tens of millions had been wiped off our market value.

If this continued, I might be pushed out by the board before tomorrow even came.

My assistant lowered her head, too nervous to breathe.

Seeing her look like she was waiting for a firing squad, I couldn’t help teasing her.

“What? Afraid you’ll have to get used to a new boss?”

She quickly shook her head and asked what we should do next.

“Go organize all funding records from the past few years, along with the progress reports for every project, including the drug project he mentioned. Get it done. The sky isn’t falling.”

Seeing how calm I looked, she finally let out a breath and went to handle it.

Only after she left did I realize my back was covered in cold sweat, the damp fabric sticking uncomfortably to my skin.

I was nowhere near as calm as I had appeared.

Back in the dressing room, I took out my phone and realized I had accidentally put it on silent. There were already hundreds of messages waiting.

Some were from the board, some from the hospital, and others from our business partners.

I did not answer any of them. I kept scrolling and saw Nathaniel’s messages.

[You shut down my research projects? Just because I let Lily use that operating room? Can you be reasonable for once? There were no other ORs available that day. That’s the only reason I used it for her.]

[I know you’re angry about this, but you shouldn’t use Adrian Hayes to make me jealous, and you definitely shouldn’t threaten me with money.]
