When I passed a restaurant and saw Elias standing in front of Elara.

I froze, my feet rooted to the ground.

What was he doing with her?

Before I could think, he grabbed her wrist tightly.

I’d never seen such heartbreak on his face.

His voice was rough and desperate, cracking slightly.

“You’d rather send someone else to meet me than come yourself?”

Elara stared and shocked, her lips parted but silent.

“Who was the guy I saw you shopping with, carrying your bags?” he said, his voice shaking.

“And the man whose car you got into the other day? Who is he?”

“Elara, how many guys are you seeing?”

Elara knew she was caught. She stayed quiet, refusing to look at him.

Elias laughed bitterly, like he’d expected it, his shoulders slumping. But he wasn’t ready to give up.

“Is that too hard to answer?”

He let go of her wrist and stepped back, as if he had finally exhausted all his strength.

“Let me ask it differently.”

“Did you ever even like me? Not even a little?”

Elara’s lips parted. She looked guilty, her eyes darting away.

Finally she said, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Stop pretending, Elara,” Elias said, his voice flat and exhausted.

Then he said something that shattered me, his words cutting like glass.

“Where’s Lila?”

Elara’s pupils narrowed slightly.

“Why are you bringing her up?”

She realized she’d slipped up. She closed her mouth and went silent, her jaw tight.

Elias sighed, his eyes closing briefly.

“You thought sending my old high school classmate would get rid of me?”

He shook his head, voice flat and cold.

“She’s nobody. I could never like her.”

“I only like you.”

The April wind cut through me like ice, making me shiver violently.

I trembled uncontrollably, unable to speak.

I wanted to laugh, but I didn’t know why. I bent over, and my elbow knocked over a vase on a nearby shelf.

Ceramic shards scattered across the floor. The sharp noise cut through the quiet restaurant.

Nearby diners gasped and stared.

Elias and Elara both looked toward me.
