Elara stared at me in genuine shock.

“No way. You agreed that fast?”

I scrolled through his social media with feigned nonchalance.

“He’s good-looking. I don’t lose anything by talking to him.”

Elara shrugged and replied casually.

“Fair.”

I froze for a moment.

My chest tightened, a bitter, aching feeling washing over me.

Elara was stunning—head-turning, camera-ready, unapologetically beautiful.

Strangers would stop her on the street to take her photo when we traveled.

She’d grin, tilting her head charmingly, and ask, “Free or paid?”

The photographers always laughed, clearly enchanted by her effortless glow.

“That had to be free.”

I just stood there, holding her jacket, small and awkward and invisible.

Life wasn’t fair.

I was average.

Not ugly, but far from pretty.

I’d never dated in college. I never reached out, and no one ever noticed me.

So getting to talk to him in Elara’s place felt like winning the lottery.

A rare, stolen stroke of luck I didn’t deserve.

Elara said she met Elias playing games online. I never imagined the top student from high school would be into online dating.

“He’s really generous,” she purred, flipping her hair over one shoulder.

“Pretty wealthy, too. Bought me expensive in-game skins.”

Then she giggled to herself, sounding almost giddy. “Too bad my other guys are even richer.”

I stayed quiet, my throat dry. I didn’t know what to say.

“The others I know in real life,” she went on. “Only him is online.”

“So…”

Her voice trailed off.

“If he’s a catfish tomorrow, don’t blame me.”

My eyes widened, my pulse spiking.

I jumped out of my chair, nearly stumbling backward.

“What? We’re meeting in person?”
