He Said I Was Greedy, I Showed Him The 500 Transfer Chapter 06

I woke up in a hospital bed.

The doctor was standing at the foot of my bed,

chart in hand.

“There’s an abdominal mass. It’s ruptured and

bleeding. She needs surgery immediately.”

“Long–term painkiller use has masked the

symptoms. We’ve already missed the optimal

treatment window.”

Callum was standing next to me.

My blood was on his shirt. His cuffs were crushed

and twisted.

“What are the risks?”

The doctor gave him the odds.

After the last one, Callum’s hand locked around

the bedrail.

“Best surgeons. Best everything.”

“I don’t care what it costs. Save her.”

I stared at the ceiling.

“How generous of you, Mr. Hastings.”

Callum couldn’t look at me.

“Mira.”

“You give me ten million a month.”

“Now you’re spending money to save me.”

“Too bad I never saw any of it. $18,000 in three

years. That’s what I got.”

Five hundred a month.

Three years. $18,000.

Callum swallowed hard.

“I didn’t know.”

“Of course you didn’t.”

“Revenge was all you cared about.”

“Every time you heard I wanted money, you

assumed I was running another con.”

“When I said I was in pain, you called it an act.”

“When I wanted to work, you thought I was trying

to escape.”

“I asked you for help for three years.”

“And every single time, you were the one who shut

the door in my face.”

He reached for my hand.

I pulled it under the blanket.

“Don’t touch me.”

His hand hung in the air.

The door opened.

His assistant walked in with a lawyer. Two police

officers followed.

Ms. Hart was already in custody.

Over three years, $360 million had gone through

the household account.

More than $200 million had been funneled through fake invoices for couture, jewelry, medical

bills, and image consulting into a web of shell

companies.

The rest had been laundered into receipts with my

name on them.

Every month, Ms. Hart gave me five hundred dollars, then told Callum I’d just burned through ten million and was asking for more.

She played both of us.

She used him against me and me against him.

The assistant set a stack of documents on the

table.

“Mr. Hastings, Elaine has given a partial

confession.”

“Her daughter and nephew were both in on it.”

“The debt ledgers Mrs. Hastings signed over the years have been reframed as proof that you were forcing her to pay off a debt.”

I spoke up.

“What about the medication?”

The lawyer opened the lab report.

“Most of them were basic over–the–counter

painkillers.”

“Some of them were just vitamins.”

“She couldn’t let you go to a real hospital. The numbers would have fallen apart.”

The color drained out of Callum’s face.

I thought of all those nights curled up on the floor, shaking from the pain.

Ms. Hart would bring me a glass of water and tell

me to stop making such a scene.

She said Callum didn’t like women who

overreacted.

So it wasn’t that the medicine didn’t work.

She hadn’t been giving me medicine at all.

The police switched on a body camera and brought Ms. Hart in to confirm her confession on

the record.

She was in handcuffs. The second she saw

Callum, she fell to her knees.

“Mr. Hastings, I know what I did was wrong.”

“I lost my head. I made a terrible mistake.”

“But it wasn’t just me.”

She pointed at me.

“Why didn’t she ever go to you herself?”

“Because you hated her.”

“She believed every word I said.”

“I told her the five hundred came from you, and

she didn’t even question it.”

Callum kicked the chair out of the way.

“Shut up.”

Ms. Hart sobbed harder.

“What good does blaming me do now?”

“When she had a fever, I asked you if we should

take her to the hospital.”

“You told me not to bother you with it.”

“When she wanted to work, you personally told me

to shut it down.”

“I took the money. Yes.”

“But you’re the one who kept her in that cage.”

Nobody spoke.

Callum stood there like something holding him up.

had just given way.

I looked at Ms. Hart.

“Are you done?”

She crawled toward my bed.

“Mrs. Hastings, I can give it all back.”

“Please. I was with you for three years. Ask him

for leniency.”

I pressed the call button.

“You didn’t take care of me.”

“You took care of $360 million.”

The police took her out.

Callum sat at my bedside. His voice was wrecked.

“Every cent will be recovered.”

“Your debt doesn’t exist. It never did.”

“From now on, you manage your own finances.”

I cut him off.

“Give me my ID and passport back.”

“Done.”

“Remove the restrictions.”

“Done.”

“Draw up the divorce papers.”

His head snapped up.

“No.”

I ripped the IV out of my hand.

Blood welled up instantly.

Callum grabbed my hand and pressed down hard.

“What are you doing?!”

“Sign it or I’m not having the surgery.”

His hands were shaking.

“Mira, don’t do this. Don’t use yourself as a

bargaining chip.”

“You almost finished me off yourself. What’s the difference?”

I looked at him.

“Sign it, Callum.”

“All you lose is a marriage.”

“If I stay, I lose my life.”
