He Said I Was Greedy, I Showed Him The 500 Transfer Chapter 05

Ms. Hart was standing in the doorway. Every drop

of color left her face.

She hadn’t had time to hide the Hermès bag.

Callum’s eyes went to the bag.

“Whose is that?”

Ms. Hart’s fingers tightened around the handle.

“Mrs. Hastings’s.”

I couldn’t straighten my back, but I laughed.

anyway.

“Mine?”

“Then why didn’t you tell me when it arrived?”

Ms. Hart recovered fast.

“Mrs. Hastings, your health hasn’t been good. I’ve been holding on to everything Mr. Hastings buys.

for you.”

“Whenever you have an event, I bring out what you

need.”

Her answer was seamless.

Just like it had been for three years.

Callum pointed at the two phones on the table.

“Explain.”

“Why did ten million turn into five hundred?”

Ms. Hart glanced at my screen.

“Mr. Hastings, the five hundred is just Mrs. Hastings’s allowance.”

“Her food, clothes, medical care, jewelry, and transportation all run through the household

account.”

She pulled out her phone and started scrolling

through charges.

“Custom couture last month: $2.6 million.”

“Private medical care: $1.2 million.”

“Jewelry maintenance: $800,000.”

“Nutrition management: $400,000.”

My name was on every single one.

Callum turned to me.

That same old suspicion was back in his eyes.

“What do you have to say now?”

I looked at him, and something inside me just shut

off.

The pain was still there. I just couldn’t feel it

anymore.

“Not one piece of clothing ever made it to me.”

“The medical bills did, though.”

“Every one of them went straight into my debt

ledger.”

Ms. Hart cut in.

“Mrs. Hastings, you can’t claim you never got these things just because you’re upset with Mr. Hastings.”

“I have your delivery records right here.”

She handed Callum a stack of electronic receipts.

Every one of them was signed for by Mira

Caldwell.

The handwriting was a perfect match for mine.

Callum’s mouth pressed into a line.

“You really came prepared, didn’t you.”

I looked at him, and whatever warmth I had left

died.

“You still think I’m lying.”

“Every bill has your signature on it.”

“Then call the police.”

I shoved my phone across the table.

“Let them investigate.”

Ms. Hart’s finger twitched.

Barely visible.

But I saw it.

So did Callum.

He didn’t call the police. He called his assistant.

“Pull every transaction from the household

account for the last three years.”

“Every vendor, every delivery address, every

medical provider. Don’t leave anything out.”

Ms. Hart spoke up fast.

“Mr. Hastings, there are a lot of accounts. That

kind of audit takes time.”

Callum looked at her.

“Did I ask you to talk?”

She shut her mouth.

The first report came through within minutes.

Callum opened a Hermès order.

The delivery address wasn’t Ridgeview Estate.

It was an apartment in Southbrook.

Registered under the name Hart.

He opened a jewelry order.

Seven days after purchase, the piece had been

shipped to a luxury consignment boutique.

The name on the receiving end was Hart.

Ms. Hart lunged for the phone.

“Mr. Hastings, it’s not what it looks like.”

Callum shoved her back.

“Then what is it?”

She stumbled into the cabinet.

The Hermès bag hit the floor. A credit card slid

out.

The name on it wasn’t mine.

Natalie Hart.

Ms. Hart’s daughter.

I bent down and picked up the card.

“So I was never Mrs. Hastings.”

“Your daughter was.”

Ms. Hart shook her head.

“Mrs. Hastings, that’s not what happened.”

“Mr. Hastings told me to buy all of it for you.”

“You didn’t want any of it, so Natalie was just

holding everything for you.”

I shoved the card in her face.

“She wore my clothes for me.”

“She wore my jewelry for me.”

“What about the medicine?”

“Did she take that for me too?”

Her lips were shaking,

“I was just following Mr. Hastings’s instructions.”

“He told me to keep you in line. To make sure you

didn’t overspend.”

“He said you’d do anything for money.”

Callum stared at her.

“I told you to take care of her.”

“I didn’t tell you to give her five hundred dollars.”

Ms. Hart broke down.

“But you never once asked how she was doing!”

“Every time I told you she was asking for money, you said don’t give in to her.”

“She needed a doctor; you said she was faking it.”

“She wanted to work; you told me to keep her

locked inside.”

“I did what you wanted, Mr. Hastings.”

“If you’d been paying attention, do you think I

could’ve gotten away with any of this?”

Callum didn’t move. Didn’t speak.

My stomach seized.

The pill bottle was empty.

I grabbed the edge of the table and my vision

blacked out.

Callum caught me before I hit the ground.

“Mira!”

I shoved him away with everything I had left.

“Don’t touch me.”

Blood ran down the hem of my dress and pooled

on the floor.

Ms. Hart screamed.

Callum scooped me up and ran.

I sagged against his chest. He kept saying my

name, over and over.

Three years, and it was the first time his voice

sounded like it might break.

But I was done answering.
