He Said I Was Clingy, So I Walked Away on the Day Our Contract Ended Chapter 11

A faint sting spread across my lips as Asher slowly pulled back.
When his eyes opened, I saw raw grief and despair in them.

It didn’t look like an act. A prickle of unease ran down my spine.

“We’re… talking about the same thing, right?”

Uncertainty crept over me. Asher’s face was ashen, his brows pinched tight.

“There’s someone else? The one who keeps calling you ‘Ms. Moore’ and the one who took you out to dinner—they’re not the same person?”

Wait, what was he even talking about?

I slowly pieced it together.

“Asher, are you crying because you think I cheated on you?”

He wiped his cheeks and took a shaky breath.

“I’m not crying.”

It was the first time I’d ever seen him act so childish—tears were practically pouring down his cheeks, yet he stubbornly refused to admit he was crying. Against all logic, I felt a laugh building.

“Uh-huh.”

He ducked his head to gently wipe the blood at the corner of my mouth. Fresh tears spilled out.

“So there really are two separate men you’ve been seeing behind my back?”

I barely made a sound, and another tear rolled down his cheek.

“All those nights you didn’t eat with me, stopped coming to me, wouldn’t let me hold you or kiss you—you were spending that time with them?”

“I pretended not to notice, so why are you still pushing for a divorce?”

“Did one of them ask you to make it official?”

“Are you leaving now to see them, or to find a locksmith?”

I fell silent.

He had a terrible habit of jumping to wild, unfounded conclusions all on his own.

I’d been wrong before. Asher wasn’t just performative—he was caught up in his own paranoid, groundless delusions.

“Asher, I don’t love you.”

Watching his real tears fall, I decided to be honest. But the moment I said it, he cried even harder.

“I already knew that! Why do you have to say it out loud?”

I choked back a laugh.

“But I never cheated on you.”

His breath caught. He looked up at me.

I met his dark eyes and sighed.

“It was the twenty-fifth, right? I brought you lunch that day.”

He studied my face, checking if I was lying.

I gave a tired half-smile.

“I overheard something. Your friend said you leave work at six thirty, but you never got home until ten thirty.”

“I thought you were sick of me hanging around. When your friend asked if I annoyed you, you said yes. I heard it.”

Asher’s gaze went still. Hurt filled his eyes.

“I was annoyed with him, not you! I told him to quit hanging around my office when I still had piles of work to finish. Why did you leave before letting me explain everything fully?”

I paused. I couldn’t tell if he was being honest or just putting on another show.

His ears turned red.

“Between six thirty and ten thirty, I was at the gym. If a guy works all day and doesn’t take care of himself, his body goes soft. I was afraid you’d lose interest and leave me…”
