He Said I Was Clingy, So I Walked Away on the Day Our Contract Ended Chapter 10

If he expected me to open it, he had to give me the code.

After a beat of silence, Asher’s lips parted slowly.

“It’s the date we first spent the night together, combined with how many times we were intimate that night.”

I stared at him in disbelief.

“How on earth am I supposed to keep track of something like that?”

I only knew we’d slept together sometime after signing the contract. Was he seriously keeping count of every single encounter?

“Was it March twelfth? As for how many times… we’d go five or six rounds most nights, sometimes going all night long whenever we were both in the mood. No one bothers keeping track of a tally like that!”

After punching in one wrong combination yet again, I kicked the side of the safe in exasperation.

I turned around. Asher was leaning against the doorframe, backlit, his features obscured.

“So none of it meant anything to you, then. You don’t remember a single thing we said or did.”

“You gushed about how deeply you loved me every day, yet you never cherished that night at all.”

He tugged his mouth into a bitter, mocking slant, his voice raw and husky.

A tight lump settled in my chest.

“You’re being completely irrational.”

I stepped around him to leave. His hand wrapped around my arm. The warm pressure against my wrist sparked a surge of irritation.

“Let me go.”

“Where do you think you’re going? Off to see him again, aren’t you?”

It was plain Asher was clearly unraveling, caught off guard and irrational, most likely blindsided because I’d been the one to bring up divorce first.

I could barely follow half of what he was saying. If I’d known he was this prone to dramatic outbursts, I would’ve let him initiate the split first—then I could’ve turn the tables and play the heartbroken victim myself.

“You can’t remember ours, but you remember every detail about him, don’t you?”

He clamped his fingers around my jaw, his hot breath fanning over my lips. For the very first time, Asher’s kiss turned wild, desperate, and possessive.

“When did you even meet him?”

“Do you remember the exact date you first slept with him?”

“How many times did you two do it that first night—do you have that memorized too?”

“Is he better than me? I’ve given you everything you craved, so why go elsewhere to get your fill?”

I bit down hard on his lip. A faint metallic tang of blood spread across both our mouths.

Asher’s frame trembled slightly, his voice breaking.

“You’re a liar… a complete, rotten liar.”

“It was the twenty-fifth, wasn’t it? I stopped by your workplace that day to drop off a home-cooked meal for you.”

“Is he more your type? Is he younger? Did you kiss him that night, or sleep with him?”

I couldn’t wrap my head around how he could speak mid-kiss while I was left utterly breathless.

He stole every bit of air from my lungs. I felt warm tears slide down my cheek. I stared wide-eyed at Asher inches from my face.

He rambled incoherent accusations against my lips, scalding tears spilled from his tightly lidded eyes, streaking his cold pale cheeks before brushing mine.

I’d noticed Asher’s long eyelashes the first day we met. For a guy who always came across so cold and unapproachable, they were surprisingly thick and soft.

Now those lashes fluttered rapidly, soaked and clumped together by his tears.

I’d always found Asher physically attractive—that was part of the reason I’d agreed to this arranged marriage. I’d never imagined he’d look even more striking crying, especially up close.

His lashes trembled nonstop. The corners of his eyes flushed a tempting red. I became so transfixed I forgot to struggle.

Meanwhile, every shaky word made his tears fall harder.

“I was right, wasn’t I? That was the night you started pulling away—you wouldn’t let me kiss you, wouldn’t cling to me anymore.”

“Did you fall for him starting that night? Or was every ounce of affection you gave me fake from the very beginning—never genuine at all?”
