He Said Don’t Wait, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 16

“…the motion to dismiss has to be filed today… yes, before discovery… I don’t care what it costs. Find someone who can do it.”
Legal talk.
The Whitakers’ war had begun.
As if he felt my eyes on him, he turned. The moment he saw me, he ended the call and plastered on a warm smile, so fast it looked painful.
“Good morning, Sleeping Beauty.”
“Good morning,” I said, my voice raspy. I tried to read past the too-perfect smile. “Is everything okay?”
“Perfect,” he said quickly, as if reciting a line. “I made breakfast. Shrimp and grits, your favorite. Coffee’s ready.”
I followed him downstairs. On the kitchen island sat a steaming bowl of shrimp and grits and a mug of black coffee. The taste of Charleston. The taste of home.
“You remembered,” I said softly.
“I remember everything about you,” he replied, a simple statement of fact.
But as we sat down to eat, the fragile peace was shattered again.
