He Said Don’t Wait, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 15

His hand hung in the air between us. That flicker of uncertainty in his eyes was a pinprick to the fragile warmth that had been building in the room.
No. It wasn’t hesitation, I realized.
It was worry. The weight of the storm he was trying to shield me from, a weight he couldn’t quite hide.
I didn’t take his hand. Instead, I closed the distance between us and walked straight into his arms.
His body went rigid for a half-second before his arms came around me, holding me with a strength that felt almost reverent. There was no lust in it, only the precious, fragile relief of finding something you thought you’d lost forever.
“Tonight,” I whispered into his chest, repeating his words back to him, “it’s just us.” His heart beat steady and strong beneath my ear, a rhythm that promised to keep the rest of the world at bay, at least for a little while.

I woke to morning sun streaming across my face, disoriented for a moment before I remembered whose bed I was in.
Noah’s house.
Our house.
I reached for the other side of the bed. The sheets were cool.
Sitting up, I saw the balcony door was ajar. Noah was standing outside, his back to me, his voice low and urgent on the phone. The morning breeze ruffled his shirt and carried snippets of his conversation back to me.
