He Said Don’t Wait, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 04

Jenna squeezed my hand, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “I’m serious, Maya. Garrett looked at you like you were a nice accessory. Noah looks at you like you’re the most important case he’s ever won.”
My heart tripped. A strange metaphor, but so accurate I couldn’t argue.
Before I could respond, Noah was by my side, his presence a sudden, quiet anchor in the swirl of the party.
“May I steal my wife?” he asked Jenna, a hint of a smile in his voice.
“She’s all yours,” Jenna said with a wink, giving me a little push toward him. “Literally.”
Noah took my hand, his palm warm and dry. He didn’t speak, just led me to the dance floor that had been set up in the center of the garden. The band slowed its tempo, and the soulful notes of an old song drifted through the evening air.
The melody was familiar.
“What is this song?” I asked softly.
“‘Stand by Me,’” Noah answered without hesitation. “The Ben E. King version. It was playing on the radio in the shelter in Savannah, six years ago.”
