He Rewrote My Marriage Contract for His Uncle—So I Became the Real Donna Chapter 08

Dante’s ascension to the head of the Vale syndicate was

a mere formality. Everyone had seen it coming

He stood at the head of the table in a black suit

impeccably tailored, his expression cold as a blade. Everyone in the room rose and bowed

Don.”

Then their eyes found me

Donna.”

I sat at Dante’s right and met their gazes without flinching. No one in this room would ever dare treat me like the woman they once laughed at behind closed doors. I had the entire Vale syndicate at my back and the most lethal man in the world at my side

As for Lucien he’d been erased from this table a long time ago

Married life moved fast

During the day, I ran my own businesses, moved

through the cocktail circuit, and closed deals. Dante

handled the underworld family councils, border

operations, the kind of conversations held in rooms

without windows

We each had our own lane, but we were never far apart

On late nights when I came home, the lights in the

main house were always still on

He’d be in the living room, a tumbler of bourbon in hand, documents spread across his lap. He never got more than a few pages in. His attention was always on

the door

The nights were a different story

Once the door closed and the lights went low, the cold Patriarch vanished. He had one particular indulgence he loved making me call him by title

Uncle. That was what he wanted to hear

I refused at first. It felt ridiculous, and I told him he was out of his mind. He didn’t push. He just held me close, patient and relentless, and let time do the work

When I finally gave in, teeth gritted, he answered in a low voice soft and satisfied, like a man who’d just been handed something priceless. The predatory gleam behind his eyes was impossible to hide

And then, predictably, he got even more ruthless. By day, he commanded a ruthless empire. By night, his only objective was dismantling my restraint

Bed, sofa, bathroom it didn’t matter. He was calculating in every boardroom and ruthless at the negotiating table, but behind our door, he was wicked enough to drive me out of my mind

The man who decided fates at the head of a conference

table was not the same man who pulled me into his

arms and refused to let go. And I was hopelessly weak

for that version of him

A year later, I got pregnant. Dante turned into a different person overnight

He frowned if I stood too long. He frowned if I didn’t

finish a meal. If I so much as rolled over in bed, he was awake and watching me in the dark

Doctors came through the house more often than visitors. The estate went into strict lockdown. The

armed detail doubled. Dante inspected the kitchen himself every ingredient, every dish, every time

When our son was born, I watched Dante’s shoulders drop for the first time in months. He held the baby against his chest like he was holding the entire future of the family, and something in his face finally eased

The boy was sharp. Even as a toddler, he could read a room quiet and serious in his father’s arms,

complete tyrant the second he landed in mine

I took him to an amusement park just after his first birthday. The day was beautiful. He had a balloon clutched in one fist, his cheeks pink from the carousel. The security perimeter was invisible but absolute

I was carrying him out, wiping his face with my sleeve

when I heard it

Violet.”

I turned

Lucien was standing a few yards away. It took me

moment to understand he’d been released

The man in front of me bore almost no resemblance to

the one I’d known. The tailored suits were gone. What

he wore now hung on his gaunt frame like it belonged

to someone else

His eyes held nothing but exhaustion and something

rubbed too thin to name. He looked at me, then at the

baby in my arms, and a bitter smile cracked across his

face

So you really are doing well,he said

I didn’t answer

He didn’t come closer. He just stood there, hands at his

sides. I just got out,he said quietly. Heard you were

here today. So I came.”

I still said nothing

He looked at me for a long time, searching my face as if

he might find some trace of the girl who used to wait

for him. Some shadow of the woman who would have

given anything to hear him say her name

There was nothing left to find

He lowered his eyes. When he spoke, his voice was

barely above a breath

I’m sorry.”

The words arrived years too late. So late they didn’t land at all. No anger. No resentment. Not even a ripple

A year or two ago, I might have felt something fury, maybe, or the old stubborn need to know if any part of what he’d done had ever been real. But standing here now, with my son warm in my arms and the afternoon sun on my face, all I felt was calm

Closure wasn’t some grand act of forgiveness. It was absolute, hollow indifference

I didn’t say a word

Lucien stood there a moment longer, and something in him seemed to understand. He gave one last smile- thin, bitter, final and turned to walk away

He looked impossibly thin as he disappeared into the

crowd

Mommy! My son lit up in my arms, bouncing against my shoulder

His little hand shot forward, pointing toward the park entrance. Daddy’s here! Daddy’s picking us up!”

I followed his hand

Dante was standing by the car, waiting. The afternoon light caught him, softening the hard edges of his face. One hand in his pocket, the other resting on the open

door

He watched us me and our son from across the lot with the same steady gaze he’d had the very first day. He stood there the way he always stood. Like a man who owned the world and bowed only to his family

I walked over, the baby on my hip. Dante reached out and lifted our son into his arms in one easy motion

His other hand settled on my waist, and he turned us

toward the car

Had enough fun?”

Almost.”

Then let’s go home.”

I looked up at him and smiled the kind that starts slowly and doesn’t stop

Everything I’d ever suffered through felt distant now, washed clean by something I couldn’t quite name. Seeing Lucien today hadn’t reopened a single wound. It had only confirmed something I’d known for a long

time

I’d walked away from the wrong person. I hadn’t just survived the game. I had rewritten the rules, taken the throne, and claimed everything that was mine

The man beside me was worth everything it had taken

to get here.
