Nolan was furious, and Sierra ended up moving in.

All the relatives were fuming, standing up for me.

I didn’t care. I wanted to go home.

Luckily, we all lived in the same neighborhood. My house was right next door.

When I got home, my parents started cursing Nolan and feeling sorry for me.

But I didn’t feel sorry for myself at all. Wasn’t this better?

That night, the thunder and rain started again.

Summer storms came on suddenly, with loud cracks of thunder.

I curled up in bed, shaking.

I suddenly remembered what my mom said about Nolan coming over during storms to keep me company.

But he definitely wouldn’t come tonight. His precious Sierra was scared of thunder too.

Just as I was thinking that, the doorbell rang. It was barely audible over the rain, but my phone buzzed with a

notification.

Someone was actually visiting in this weather.

My mom answered the door and let him in.

I listened carefully and heard Nolan’s urgent voice. “Elara is scared of thunder. She always comes looking for

me when it storms. She can’t sleep if I’m not here.”

“Elara is already asleep. You should go home.” My mom’s voice was cold.

“I know I messed up. I was mean to her today. I really love her. It’s just… Can I go up and see her?”

“No.”

Nolan was quiet for a moment. Then he sighed. “Then please tell her I know she hasn’t forgotten me. I’ll wait

for her to forgive me. Even if it takes forever.”

Gross.

I got goosebumps. The thunder didn’t even scare me anymore.

I turned on the light and got up to get some water. I glanced toward the Hartley house and could see the

third-floor window.

The light was on, and a figure stood by the window, staring silently in my direction.

I jumped. When I looked closer, I realized it was Sierra.

She was standing there like a ghost, probably watching for Nolan.

I quickly pulled the curtains shut. I didn’t want nightmares.
