He Pushed Me to Marry an Old Man, Then Cried When I Said Yes Chapter 07

Ethan returned home in a daze.

Looking at the house he and Harper had once shared, he felt nothing but emptiness.

Without Harper, was this place even a home?

He sat alone in the hollow house for a long time.

While he was still lost and numb, Vivian came looking for him.

“Ethan, why haven’t you been answering my calls?”

Vivian’s eyes were red as she walked over and grabbed Ethan’s hand, her voice urgent. “Ethan, my dad’s creditors came after him again. My dad wants to hand me over to some old man to pay off

his debts. Help me. Please help me, okay?”

“Why should I help you?” Ethan shook her off, his expression cold. “Vivian, haven’t I already helped

you enough?”

Vivian froze. “Ethan, what’s wrong with you today? You said before that no matter what happened, you would always protect me.”

“That was because you lied to me,” Ethan cut her off coldly. “Vivian, you were not the person who donated a kidney to me three years ago. I treated you well and helped you because I believed you had saved my life. But you never saved me. So why should I keep helping you?”

Vivian stood frozen in place, panic flashing across her face. “Ethan, I… I never lied to you. You were the one who assumed I had donated the kidney. I never actually admitted it.”

“Yes. I assumed.” Ethan suddenly lowered his eyes and gave a self-mocking laugh. “I was too

stupid. Too blind.”

“I never found out the truth, and I mistook you for the person who saved me.”

“Vivian,” he said, lifting his eyes to her with absolute resolve, “find a time so we can get the divorce finalized. Don’t come looking for me again. Your problems have nothing to do with me anymore,

and I won’t help you again.”

Six months later, I came back to the States.

But the moment I landed, I saw a familiar figure outside the airport terminal.

“Harper, I finally found you!”

Ethan ran toward me with red eyes. “Harper, why didn’t you tell me you were leaving the country? Why did you block me everywhere?”

“And the kidney I received three years ago-was it from you? Why didn’t you tell me? How much else have you been hiding from me?”

I had not expected him to come ask me about that.

Three years had already passed, and I did not know how he had found out.

But at this point, I saw no reason to keep hiding it.

“Yes.” I nodded calmly. “I was the one who donated the kidney you received. Back then, you hid

your illness from me because you didn’t want me to worry. I was afraid you would feel guilty, so I

secretly donated a kidney to you.”

“I just don’t understand why you later came to believe Vivian had saved your life.”

After donating the kidney to Ethan, I made up an excuse about going on an out-of-state business

trip and avoided him for three months so he would not notice anything.

Later, to keep him from seeing the incision on my side, I covered that frightening scar with thick

concealer even in the middle of summer.

I kept that secret for three whole years.

Claire once asked me if I regretted it.

I said I did not.

I would always remember what that boy had promised me so firmly when I was twelve, “Harper, I’ll

always protect you.”

I had thought trading one kidney for a lifetime of his protection was worth it.

I just never imagined that the boy’s promise would be slowly washed away by time.

The long incision on my side had already closed and scarred over.

But on countless nights, it still ached deep under my skin.

Ethan’s eyes grew even redder, and his voice was hoarse beyond recognition. “Harper, back then,

the nurse told me the donor was in Bed Eight in the room next to mine. When I went there, I saw

Vivian. That’s why all these years, I thought she was the one who saved me.”

Only then did I remember.

“At first, I really was in Bed Eight in the room next oor I explained after a pause “But I was afraid you would run into me, so 1 transferred to another room afterward”

Ethan stood frozen, as if his mind had gone blank

After a long moment, he grabbed my wrist and choked out, “Harper, I was wrong I was so wrong Come with me. I’ll take you back. You were supposed to be my wife. You should never have married into the Lancaster family

“Ethan, let go of me.” I pulled hard and broke free from his grip. “Ethan, I’m married into the Lancaster family now. The wedding already happened. Just like you said, what’s done is done. I

don’t have a choice.”

“No, you’re not!” Ethan’s chest rose and fell violently with emotion “Harper, you were supposed to be my wife. I was the one you should have married lost my mind for a while and threw you to the wolves. I’m taking you with me now. We’ll put everything back the way it was

“We can’t go back.” I cut him off. “Ethan, I’m pregnant. My husband treats me well, and I won’t

divorce him.”

Ethan went rigid.

His gaze slowly dropped, and only then did he notice the slight curve of my belly.

“How is that possible? Harper, your husband is a ninety-year-old man. How could he have gotten

you pregnant?”

“My husband isn’t old.”

“What did you say?

I lifted my eyes to him, my voice turning colder. “Ethan, my husband is young. He is not old, and I’m not being mistreated in this marriage.”

“Harper, what the hell are you talking about?

Ethan grew even more agitated. He grabbed my wrist again, trying to drag me away. “Harper, I

have to take you with me today. I don’t care where that baby came from. You’re coming with me, and I’m going to put everything back the way it was

The moment he finished speaking, a furious voice rang out behind him.

“Let her go.”
