The man was very tall, almost six-foot-three, with fair skin and strikingly handsome features.

He turned to Ethan and asked simply, “Need something?”

Ethan stared at the braided cord bracelet on the man’s wrist, his thoughts going blank for a moment.

The bracelet itself looked ordinary, but the braiding pattern was unique.

Ethan knew that in all of Harborview, only Harper knew how to braid a bracelet that way.

“That bracelet…” he could not help asking. “Where did you get it?”

The man answered evenly, “My wife made it for me

“Your wife?”

The man raised an eyebrow. “Why? Are you interested in my wife, sir?”

“No, no.” Ethan looked awkward. “I just thought it was nice, so I asked.”

He told himself he was probably overthinking it.

Harper’s husband was that ninety-year-old Lancaster patriarch. How could it possibly be this young, handsome man in front of him?

It was impossible.

Ethan left the cemetery and returned to the hospital.

Vivian was already awake, sitting up in bed and forcing out tears.

The moment she saw him, she reached for him pitifully, tears streaming down her face. “Ethan, you’re finally back. I thought you had abandoned me. Ethan, my family is bankrupt. If you don’t help me, my dad really will hand me over to some old man to pay off his debts.”

“Hey, don’t say that. How could I abandon you?” Ethan patted her back and comforted her patiently. “All right, stop crying. I’m not leaving.”

Just then, a nurse walked in with a tray.

“Vivian Pierce in Bed Three, it’s time for your routine exam.”

Vivian was taken to the exam room.

After the results came back, Ethan took the report to the doctor.

In the doctor’s office, he asked casually, “Doctor, my wife donated a kidney before. Could this car

accident have affected her remaining kidney?”

“Donated a kidney?” The doctor looked confused. “According to the scans, the patient has both

kidneys, and both are functioning normally.”

“What did you say?”

“I mean the patient still has both kidneys. She has never donated one.”

“How is that possible?” Ethan’s eyes widened in disbelief. “She clearly has a long scar on her side.

It looks exactly like the kind of scar a kidney donation surgery would leave.”

The doctor explained, “From what we can tell, the scar on her side is from open kidney-stone surgery. It wasn’t from a kidney donation.”

Ethan felt as if he had been struck by lightning.
