He Paid Me 1 Dollar For 10 Pounds, He Paid Her 100,000 For A Bag Chapter 07

His expression froze.

Guilt flooded his face-raw, instant, too late.

“Tessa…”

I ignored him and walked straight inside.

Two copies of a drafted marital settlement agreement sat waiting on the table.

“Sign them, Everett.”

“Tessa, do you really want a divorce?”

Panic cracked through Everett’s voice. His lips were shaking.

“I only did those things to push you to lose the weight!”

“You lost the weight. Can’t we just move on?”

He looked genuinely lost.

“Maybe I went too far. I’ll give you that. But it worked, didn’t it?”

Everett yanked at his tie and slumped onto the couch.

He pulled off his glasses and rubbed his face.

“Tessa, we’re not kids anymore.”

“I can’t keep coddling you like we’re still in college.”

“Years of building this business taught me one thing.”

“Results are all that matter. How we get there doesn’t.”

I silently stared at Everett for several seconds.

I searched his face for any trace of the boy I’d fallen in love with.

But I found nothing.

“Everett, you achieved the result you wanted.”

“Now it’s my turn to get mine.”

“Let’s end this.”

When we married, I never imagined that I would divorce Everett.

I’d walked into that marriage with everything I had.

I knew bills and routine could wear love down.

I’d braced myself for hard times.

But there was one thing I’d never imagined.

I never imagined it would end like this. This ugly. This pathetic.

“I had a lawyer draft the marital settlement agreement.”

“We live in a fifty-fifty state. Everything gets split down the middle.”

“I don’t want shares in your company. Buy my half out at fair market value.”

I looked around the mansion.

“I don’t want the house either.”

I bent down and signed.

Everett suddenly snatched the agreement away and tore it to pieces in his hands.

“I won’t sign!”

“No way in hell!”

The fury he’d been holding back broke through.

Everett shot to his feet, and all the color drained from his face.

He crumpled onto the floor.

I didn’t see it coming.

I froze for a split second before grabbing my phone and dialing 911.

“Family of Everett Halstead?”

The ER doctor stepped into the waiting room and called out.

I was about to stand when Mallory shot out of her chair.

“I am!”

“Is your name Tessa?”

The doctor frowned as he looked at his clipboard.

Mallory’s body stiffened.

She shook her head.

“Then I can’t discuss his condition with you.”

“I need his legal next of kin. Step aside.”

The doctor shut her down without blinking.

I stood and walked forward.

“I am Tessa. How is Everett?”

The doctor asked me to sign the consent form and sighed.

“He’s way too young for a stomach this wrecked.”

“He has multiple gastric perforations and is undergoing surgery now.”

“You’re his family. Make sure he drops the alcohol and the cigarettes, immediately.”

“If he keeps running himself into the ground, his body will give out before he hits forty!”

I nodded silently.

I returned to the cold hospital chair.

Mallory’s voice came from behind me, sharp and bitter.

“Mr. Halstead is the most perfect man I’ve ever met.”

“At work, he constantly pushes himself to build his empire and sleeps only five hours a day.”

“He’s never once cheated. Not with anyone.”

“Why does a fat woman like you get to have him?”

“Why won’t he just let you go?!”
