He Paid Me 1 Dollar For 10 Pounds, He Paid Her 100,000 For A Bag Chapter 06

“We met while jogging two months ago. Are you Tessa’s *ex-husband*?”

Grant Langford leaned on those last two words like a blade.

Everett’s face hardened.

“We’re not divorced. Watch your mouth, Mr. Langford.”

“Tessa is my wife.”

“Your wife?”

“Funny. Tessa told me you’d sign the papers the minute she lost the weight.”

“She lost it. So when’s the divorce?”

Grant’s smile didn’t waver. Every syllable was aimed.

“That’s none of your business!”

Everett’s face went dark. He didn’t go back inside.

Instead, he grabbed my arm and hauled me away.

By the time we reached the car, Everett’s chest was heaving.

“Tessa, you…”

He looked at me, and something raw crossed his face. Awe, maybe.

“Why didn’t you reach out? Two months and nothing.”

“You didn’t take any of the money I sent. How’s the baby? Have you been going to your appointments?”

His eyes dropped to my stomach. He frowned.

“Shouldn’t you be five months along by now?”

“Why aren’t you showing?”

I calmly took the abortion paperwork out of my bag.

“Because there is no baby…”

I didn’t finish.

Mallory suddenly caught up, squeezing between us.

“Mr. Halstead, why are you leaving?”

“Aren’t you going to talk to the Langford Group CEO?”

Everett’s expression twisted. Disgust, but not at me. At her.

“Forget it.”

“We won’t be working with the Langford Group.”

Mallory responded with a soft “Oh.”

Her fingers went to his tie, automatic, familiar.

“Mr. Halstead, your tie is loose again.”

“How could you be so careless?”

Her voice dropped to a purr.

When she finished with the tie, her hand kept going. Down from his collar.

Her hand reached Everett’s suit pants.

Then she slipped it directly into his pocket and pulled out a condom wrapper.

“Mr. Halstead, we’re done pretending now.”

“I’ll take this so Mrs. Halstead doesn’t get the wrong idea.”

Every word dripped honey.

I watched silently.

Everett suddenly frowned and stepped backward.

He put some distance between them.

“Tessa, don’t get the wrong idea.”

“Nothing happened between us. It was just a prop for the investors…”

“You don’t need to explain.”

I cut him off and watched rain start to fall. My voice was even.

“We can deal with this at home.”

Something close to panic flickered across Everett’s face.

He took a deep breath and opened the front passenger door for me.

I gave him a thin smile.

“Don’t bother.”

“I’ll sit in the back.”

“Wouldn’t want your investors getting confused.”

Everett’s body stiffened.

He still wanted to explain.

But I’d already gotten into the back seat.

When we arrived home, I pushed my door open and got out first.

I walked to the front door and looked at the electronic scale that was still sitting in the foyer.

A hollow laugh slipped out of me.

“Everett, I need to weigh myself before going inside.”

“I know the drill.”

I stepped onto the scale with my shoes on and looked at Mallory, who suddenly looked panicked.

I lowered my head and read the weight displayed on the scale.

“One hundred seventy-seven pounds!”

“I’ve clearly lost the weight, but it still reads one hundred seventy-seven pounds.”

“Mallory, you picked this scale out. Why don’t you give it a try?”

I stepped off the scale, then grabbed a frozen Mallory and dragged her onto it.

“It still says one hundred seventy-six pounds!”

“So it seems… I didn’t eat anything that night after all. Someone tampered with the scale.”

I looked at Everett. And smiled.
