That summer, my grandmother fell seriously ill again.

In the end, I used the check Hayes had given me.

Between the surgery and hospital bills, it came to $150,000.

But I still could not keep her.

I did not tell anyone.

What I never expected was that later that night, when I was standing in the hospital hallway at my

lowest point, to get a call from Hayes.

He got straight to the point.

“What happened?”

He clearly already knew I had used the check.

The moment I heard his voice, all the grief in my chest surged up at once.

For one second, almost instinctively, I wanted to pour my heart out the way I had during that winter

break half a year ago.

But right then, fireworks crackled on the other end.

Then came a girl’s delighted squeal. “Hayes, look! It’s so beautiful!”

Only then did I remember hearing that Hayes had taken Serena on an overseas vacation not long

ago.

I snapped back to myself.

“Nothing.”

Maybe my voice sounded too hoarse.

His voice paused slightly, but he did not push the question. Instead, he asked, “Were you crying?”

“No.”

He was silent for a moment.

“You can tell me anything,” he said. “Or is Nolan there with you?”

I said, “No.”

Over the line, I heard the rustle of him was putting on a jacket.

“I’ll come back.”

I opened my mouth, but before I could speak, Serena’s voice cut in.

“Hayes, who are you talking to? Where are you going?”

“Are you flying back? But I’m not done with this trip yet.”

Hearing that, I bit down on the back of my hand and forced myself not to cry out loud.

“No need.”

“I think we’re even now. Unless there’s something important, we don’t need to contact each other

again.”

Then I hung up.
