“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”

Liam’s eyes widened, guilt flickering in their depths.

My lips curved without warmth. “I knew you wouldn’t marry me today.”

I was outside the door last night,when you were all joking about it. I bought you Liquid IV packets.”

He froze. “The packets on the bar… you left those?”

I nodded. Last night, I’d heard he was at the Velvet Lounge. His stomach was weak,alcohol wrecked him. So I’d rushed over.

But outside the VIP booth, I heard him talking with Skyler.

“Bro, tomorrow’s April Fool’s. You lost the bet. Let’s make it a game.”

“Everyone knows Joy’s desperate. Text her to meet at the clerk’s office tomorrow. See what she does.”

Liam jumped up. “Are you saying I should actually marry her? Are you insane?”

Skyler chuckled. “Of course not. Tomorrow, just tell her it was an April Fool’s joke. I want to see her face.”

Liam sighed. “Thank god. I thought you actually wanted me to marry Joy.”

“I’m not getting married. I like my freedom. A wife would just control me,it’s annoying.”

Skyler slung an arm over his shoulder. “I know, bro. I don’t want you married either. How else could we have fun?”

My feet felt stuck to the ground. Then my phone buzzed—a text from Liam.

“Dress up pretty tomorrow. We’ll get our marriage license at the county clerk’s office.”

If it were real, I’d have jumped for joy. But it was just a prank for Skyler.

I typed one word, “Okay.”

Then I put the Liquid IV packets on the bar.

Right after, my mom called. “Joy, you’re not getting any younger. If you and Liam…”

I cut her off. “I agree to the arranged marriage.” I’ll get the marriage license at the Willow Creek County Clerk’s Office tomorrow.”

So the person I came to marry today isn’t Liam.

I decided then. The moment he planned that prank, I was done.

“Liam, that’s why I already knew your joke.”

He stumbled, guilt flashing across his face. “Then why did you even come?”

“I…”

Skyler cut in, pointing disdainfully. “What else? You knew it was fake but still tried to force him.”

“Joy, you’d sell your soul to marry? It’s embarrassing for all women.”

“Do you know how much this pushes men away?”

I didn’t bother arguing. “Whatever you think. I’m not here for you.”

I turned toward the Willow Creek County Clerk’s Office lobby.

But before I could take two steps, Liam blocked me again.

He glared at me, furious. “Joy, how much longer are you gonna make a scene?”

“I told you, I won’t marry you today.” What are you doing in the lobby?”

“Do you think hanging around the lobby will force me to give in? This only makes you look crazy.”

I walked past him.

But Skyler suddenly snatched my bag.

She pulled out my ID, hovering it over the drain. “Let’s see you marry without this.”
